For the first time in this particular group of girls’ lives, they were deemed champions of the Lyons Youth Tournament. Now this group has won district tournaments and even state tournaments while playing together but never the Lyons Youth Tournament so this win was monumental.
The girls were undefeated the entire tournament, beating teams like Jenkins County 13-4 and Swainsboro 17-0. The girls defeated Hawkinsville to get into the Championship Game 13-0 and then faced Hawkinsville, in a much closer game, and won 6-4 to take the title.
The game went scoreless for the first two and a half innings until Lyons put six on the board in the bottom of the third. Autumn Jarriel started the inning reaching on a base hit. Marishka Smith reached on a walk and NoraGrace Mercer on an error. The bases were loaded for Anniston Powell who reached on an error scoring the team’s first run. Brinley Miller stepped to the plate and smacked an RBI single scoring another but during Miller’s at bat Jarriel scored on a passed ball. At this point it was 3-0 Lyons. Shay Stringer, who was pitching the game for Lyons, stepped to the plate and drove a ball that scored two runs and gave her an RBI double. The sixth run was scored by catcher Laura Zamarano who reached on an RBI single.
Left-handed pitcher Shay Stringer pitched the first three innings and gave up four walks and had six strikeouts. Anniston Powell came in and finished the game on the rubber.
The girls are now Lyons Youth Tournament Champions and will continue their All-Star season by playing some practice games before heading off to the GRPA State Tournament. This year there is no district tournament for the girls so they are automatically going to Augusta for their chance at another state title.
