Swainsboro 2021: Game 3

For the second week in a row the Toombs County High School baseball swept a region series. The Bulldogs wrapped up the regular season beating the Swainsboro Tigers in game three 12-4.

The Bulldogs opened up scoring four runs in the top of the first. The Bulldogs had four base hits in a row and two of them were RBIs. Senior Chandler Lynn and Chase Musselman reached on base hits. Senior Gray Stephens scored Lynn on an RBI single and Freshman Trayvone Harris scored Musselman on an RBI single. Freshman Brantley Upshaw grounded into a fielder’s choice that scored a run and Senior Foster Jones had a groundout that scored a run.

The Bulldogs scored two more in the second. Freshman Jesus Quintero and Lynn both reached on a walk. Musselman had another base hit and Harris reached on a walk scoring a run. Upshaw did the same during his at bat and after the second it was 6-0 TCHS.

The Bulldogs and the Tigers both scored a run in the third. Senior Alex Gordy reached on a walk and Quintero on a base hit. After two fly outs Stephens walked and so did Harris scoring a run. The Tigers scored a run on an RBI single by Elijah Loyd. It was 7-1 TCHS after the third.

In the top of the fourth TCHS scored four more. Upshaw and Junior Bryson Stanley reached on base hits. Gordy scored Upshaw on an RBI double. Quintero had a sacrifice fly to left field scoring a run. Junior Kodie Cortez entered the game and had an RBI single scoring Stanley. Stephens was up to bat and scored Cortez on an RBI single. The inning ended after Sophomore Carson Braddy reached on a base hit and Stephens was put out at home. The Tigers scored a run in the fourth on a shot to deep right center by Harrison Jones. It was 11-2 TCHS after the fourth.

The Bulldogs did not score in the fifth but the Tigers did. Swainsboro scored a run on an RBI double by Kason Palmer. The score after the fifth was 11-3 TCHS.

Both teams scored a run in the sixth. Cortez scored on a passed ball. The Tigers scored a run on some Bulldog errors and it was 12-4 TCHS and the Bulldogs went on to take the game.

Upshaw pitched the first three innings and allowed two hits and one unearned run. He gave up two walks and had five strikeouts. Junior Caden VerSluis pitched three and gave up three hits, three runs and a walk. Sophomore Lucas O’Conner pitched the seventh and had a strikeout and gave up two walks.

The Bulldogs will finish the 2021 season at 8-7 on the region and 16-11 overall. TCHS will enter the playoffs as the fourth seed from Region 2 AA and will be on the road for the first round of the GHSA State Playoffs, opening up against the Bleckley County Royals. The Royals are entering the playoffs as the first seed from Region 3 AA. The games will be played on Thursday, April 29 with the first game beginning at 4 and the second game following. The if necessary game will be played on Friday. This is the first time the Bulldog baseball team has been to the playoffs since 2017, when the Bulldogs made it to the Final Four before losing to Jeff Davis twice.
