Coming off of a 10-4 win over the Swainsboro Tigers, the Toombs County Bulldog baseball team only had to win one more to gain a seat in the playoffs as the fourth seed. On Thursday night in Lyons the Bulldogs did just that, beating the Tigers 14-4 in six innings.
The Bulldogs followed a pattern, scoring wise, in the first three innings. TCHS scored three runs in the first, second and third. The Bulldogs scored three unearned runs in the first. The Swainsboro pitching staff walked six Bulldog batters and that gave the Bulldogs three runs.
In the second, TCHS scored three runs of which two were earned. Junior Logan Knight reached on an infield hit and Junior Kodie Cortez ran for Knight. Cortez was scored on an RBI by Senior Chandler Lynn, who was celebrating his birthday. Senior Chase Musselman reached on a base hit and Freshman Trayvone Harris hit a sacrifice grounder scoring Lynn. Junior Jason Dukes scored Musselman on an RBI single. It was 6-0 after the second.
TCHS scored three earned runs in the third. Sophomore Wil Watts reached on a double and Lynn drove him in on an RBI single. Musselman drove Lynn in on an RBI single and Senior Gray Stephens scored Musselman on an error. After the third it was 9-0 TCHS.
The Bulldogs yielded three unearned runs in the top of the fourth to the Tigers on three defensive errors. The Bulldogs did not score in the bottom of the fourth but scored three more in the fifth. Lynn reached on an error and Musselman on a hit. Senior Foster Jones entered the game and scored both of his fellow seniors on a two run RBI double. Harris walked and after two fly outs Watts scored Jones on an error. The Bulldogs were leading 12-3 after the fifth.
In the top of the sixth, the Tigers scored a run and in the bottom of the inning the Bulldogs scored two to end the game early by the run rule. Harris had a two run RBI double scoring Lynn and Musselman.
Knight pitched all six innings. He gave up seven hits, four unearned runs, a walk and had four strikeouts. Knight still leads the Bulldog pitching staff with 52 total strikeouts.
With the win, the Bulldogs now qualify for the state playoffs. This will be the first playoff appearance the Bulldog baseball team has made since 2017.
The Bulldogs are now 7-7 on the region and 15-11 overall with a five game winning streak.
