The Toombs County High School baseball team faced off against the Portal Panthers and the results were a 15-0 win in three innings.
Last year, TCHS shutout the Panthers in Portal 13-0 in five innings and the Bulldogs did it again in 2021. Offensively, it was a breath of fresh air compared to the game versus Calvary Day. Although the Bulldogs did not have a ton of hits Monday night, they did have a ton of people on base. Panther pitching gave up eight walks and hit six TCHS batters. TCHS was given 14 base runners and with that advantage the team used it.
TCHS scored two in the bottom of the first, three in the bottom of the second and then ran away with the game in the bottom of the third scoring 10 runs. Senior Gray Stephens had an excellent night at the plate for the Bulldogs. Stephens went 2-3 with a HBP. As far as runs scored he only had two.
In the bottom of the first, TCHS gained baserunners with a walk and two HBPs. Junior Bryson Stanley drove in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly, scoring Chandler Lynn from third base. Then catcher Junior Jason Dukes, came to the plate and had a RBI double which scored the second run of the inning for TCHS.
In the bottom of the second, Junior Kodie Cortez reached on a HBP and after two strikeouts Stephens was up to the plate and nailed a shot all the way to the fence in left-center. Stephens turned a standup double into a triple and scored a run. During Dukes’s at bat in the second, two runs were scored on passed balls by the catcher.
In the bottom of the third TCHS ran away with the game and batted through the line up an entire time and a half. The Bulldogs scored 10 runs to end the game in three innings.
Senior Chase Musselman pitched the game for the Bulldogs. In the first, he had a groundout, gave up a base hit and then induced a grounder which turned into a 6-4-3 double play by the TCHS defense. In the second, Musselman retired the side on three consecutive strikeouts. In the third, Musselman had two strikeouts and a flyout to third baseman, Bryson Stanley.
The Bulldogs are now 2-1 on the 2021 season.
