Since the summer of 2015 the Lyons Recreation Department has won seven GRPA State Championships including three each of the last two seasons. In the last week of this June five more Lyons teams will be seeking titles.
Flea Girls- 8 and under- This young group is going to state as the District 1 Champions. They lost their first game in the district tourney at Effingham County and then reeled off five straight wins in the losers bracket including four in a row on the final day of the tourney. Lyons defeated Effingham 12-4 and 12-4 to compete that amazing Friday.
These girls play excellent defense and the whole lineup swings the bat well. Some of the girls can hit the ball deep and the others are speedy and get on base by beating the throws to first base.
State Tournament at Paulson Field in Savannah from Tuesday, June 25-27
Lyons will open up on Tuesday, June 25 at 5:30 p.m. versus the District 2 Champion Wayne County on Field 1. Effingham County, Glynn County and Lee County also make up the five-team field.
The championship round begins on Thursday, June 25 at noon on Field 4. Bracket
Flea Boys- 8 and under- These boys can hit and field the ball. They have outscored their opponents in winning both the Lyons Youth and the District 1 Tournaments by nearly nine runs per game- 12.3 to 3.6. They rolled through both brackets undefeated.
State Tournament will played at Paulson Field in Savannah June 25-27.
Lyons will open up against South Bryan- the District 2A Champ on Tuesday, June 25 at 5:30 p.m. on Field 4.
There are 10 teams in the tourney and the championship round begins on Thursday, June 27 at 4 p.m.on Field 4. Bracket
Mite Girls- 10-11- These girls rallied from a three-run deficit in the final inning to beat Swainsboro 10-9. The big hit came off the bat of Rayne Sears, who hit the ball just over the shortstop’s glove with the bases loaded and two outs. McKenzie Coursey scored the winning run.
State Tournament will be held at Clarence E. Morgan in Effingham County June 25-27.
Lyons will open up against the District 2 runner up Douglas- Coffee on June 25 at 3 p.m. on Field 1.
There are eight teams in the tournament and the championship round is June 27 at 11 a.m. on Field 1. Bracket
Midget Girls- 11 and 12- The girls won the District 1 Championship- at Partin Park- by going undefeated and they knocked off Swainsboro 11-3. They came up two runs short of winning the Lyons Youth Tournament when they lost to Bacon County 10-9. Shaylin Stringer and Casey Cantwell handle the pitching and there are plenty of bats in the lineup to provide the offense.
State Tournament will be held at the E. B. Hamilton Complex in Tifton June 25-27.
Lyons will play on June 26 at 10 a.m. on Field 4 versus the winner of District 3 Champion Lee County and District 2 runner up Douglas- Coffee.
There are seven teams in the tourney and the championship round begins on June 27 at 11:30 a.m. on Field 4. Bracket
Junior Boys- 13-14- The Lyons Junior Boys opened up their tourney play roaring through the Lyons Youth Tourney undefeated and beating Vidalia 6-2 in the championship game. However, in the District 1 Tournament- at Vidalia-a bad first inning led to 9-1 loss to Vidalia and although they did battle back in the losers bracket for a rematch with their rival in the championship round, they lost 8-4.
Since only the District 1 Champion advanced to the state tourney, Lyons season was over. However, a team dropped out of the state tourney and Lyons was invited to take over that spot in the bracket.
This group has strong pitching, hitting and defense and many of these boys have already won a big championship as members of the Toombs County Middle School team.
State tourney will be held at Diamond Lakes near Hephzibah from June 25-29.
Lyons will open up on June 25 at 7 p.m. on Field 4 versus District 2 Champion Wayne County.
There are 10 team in the tourney and the championship round is on Saturday, June 29 at 10 a.m. on Field 4. Bracket
