The Toombs County Bulldogs made four errors in the first three inning and didn’t have a hit until the sixth, but still they found a way to beat Bacon County 3-2 in eight innings at Jacky Jones Field in Lyons. Freshman Kodie Cortez, who was moved up in the batting order from ninth to fifth due to his hot bat, singled in the game-winning run with the bases loaded and nobody out in the extra inning. The freshman was facing right-handed reliever Jacob Smith who throws side arm. His first three pitches were nowhere close to the strike zone. The next two dropped in to load the count and on the next pitch the right-handed hitter singled up the middle. Kodie went 1-for-3 with a walk. He hit into a double play in the sixth inning which brought in a run to put the Bulldogs up 2-1.
In the top of the seventh starting pitcher Chase Musselman retired the first two Raiders on a strikeout and a pop up to Brock Harrison at short. Number three hitter Adam Newberry was Bacon’s last chance to extend the game and he jumped on a 1-0 pitch and hit it over the center field fence, some 360 feet from home plate, to tie the game at 2-all.
The Bulldogs’ misplays set up the Raiders with numerous scoring opportunities. Bacon scored an unearned run in the second, but Musselman stranded Raiders at second and third base in the first and second and a runner at third in the third inning.
The Bulldogs didn’t have a base runner until the third inning off right-handed starter Bennett Arney. Musselman and Chase Miller each walked and with one down and Chandler Lynn grounded out to the first baseman to bring home Musselman to tie the game at 1.
The Bulldogs first hit of the game came in the sixth inning when Cole Graham led off with a double. Dalton Lynn singled on an 0-2 pitch and later in the inning Bryce Deloach doubled on an 0-2 pitch.
Graham also crushed a double in the eighth to put runners on second and third. On defense he senior catcher caught a difficult pop up in foul territory and he tagged out a runner at home plate in the fourth denying Bacon the lead in a 1-1 game. With a runner at third and one down, Chase Kirkland hit a fly ball to right. Trey Cloud caught the ball and threw the ball to the plate, just slightly up the third base line. Graham caught the ball, absorbed some contact from Cooper Brown and held onto the ball for the third out of the inning.
On the mound Musselman pitched 7 1/3 innings and allowed five hits and one earned run with four strikeouts and five walks. Dalton Lynn was the winning pitcher after getting the final two outs of the eighth on a ground out and a strikeout.
