The Toombs County Lady Bulldogs followed up their eight-point win at Metter- back on November 30- with a 37-34 victory at home on January 4.
The Lady Bulldogs scored nearly half their points in the first quarter (18-of-37). Ziahya Griffin hit two 3-pointers and scored all 6 of her points in the first period. Calvnika Davis also sank a first quarter 3-ball as she scored 5 points. Leading scorer K.K. Mobley tossed in 10 of her 13 points in the fourth quarter. Ashunti Campbell scored 6, Diamond Logan 3 on a 3-pointer and LiliAnn Pittman 2.
“We missed a lot of shots tonight, we missed a lot of free throw,” head coach Melody Walker said. “We missed a lot of open shots that we could have made. It was just a slower game. The pace was slowed down because of some pressing on their part. We just kind of slowed down offensively and took our time.”
The Lady Bulldogs held Metter to single digits in three of he four quarters. “We won it with our defense tonight most definitely. We mixed up some zone defenses. We had a big first quarter and shot the ball well from the perimeter. But after that we fell off and we just made sure that we limited their opportunities to get open looks,” Walker said.
The Lady Bulldogs are 8-4 overall and 4-3 in Region 2. With Vidalia losing to Swainsboro 42-28, Toombs County now has fourth place to itself in the region standings. “We have a lot of youth on our team which is to our advantage because they are so multiple. They are playing hard and are getting after it and getting better everyday. We are going to continue to capitalize on that stuff and continue to build them up so they can be what they need to be, hopefully, by the time we get to region tournament play.”
