Dublin rules again as the Bulldogs’ season comes to an end in the GHSA Playoffs

The Dublin Irish have always had the Toombs County’s number in the regular season winning all eight games. The Region 3 champions continued that trend in the first round of the GHSA Playoffs in the Shamrock Bowl. The Irish scored 35 first half points in their 49-14 victory. 10-1 Dublin will play Thomasville in the second round on Friday in Dublin. Thomasville beat Hephzibah  42-7. Toombs County ends the season at 5-6.

Dublin quarterback Rodriquez Martin scored three touchdowns and threw for one. He scored on runs of 10 and five-yards and returned an interception for 60-yards plus he threw a 47-yard TD pass.

Region 2 AA went 1-3 in the first round of the playoffs. The Jeff Davis Yellow Jackets, who led at Dodge County 21-19 at half, lost to the Indians 39-21 in Eastman. Vidalia dropped a 31-25 decision to Washington County in Buck Cravey Field. The only Region 2 winner was region champ Swainsboro which defeated Northeast 23-7 in Emanuel County.

First Quarter

On a  rainy and wet night in Dublin, the Bulldogs recovered an onside kick at the Irish 46 to open the game. Trey Cloud completed an eight-yard pass to Chandler Lynn. D.J. Mincey was wearing number 5 in honor of Demetrius Owens, who left the game last week in an ambulance, ran the ball twice. The Bulldogs did not pick up a first down on a fourth down and one play at the Irish 37.

Dublin took over at the Irish 38 and Corteveyas Mitchell ran for four-yards. Jermaine Cooley ran for a first down. Martin picked up a second first down on a nine-yard run. Martin gained three more on third and one to pick up a first down. Mitchell gained 11 and gave Dublin a first down at the Dawg eight-yard line. Cooley scored the touchdown on second and goal on a two-yard run. Shemar Dollar kicked the PAT and Dublin had a 7-0 lead.

The Bulldogs started their second drive at their 23. Cloud threw two first down passes to Lynn for 15 and 16-yards and then Martin intercepted a pass intended for Lynn and returned it 60-yards for a TD. With the Dollar extra point the Irish lead was 14-0 with 1:02 to play in the first quarter.

Toombs County fumbled the ball and Dublin recovered at the Bulldog 40. Cooley gained five and 10-yards to pick up a first down to end the first quarter.

Second Quarter

Martin scrambled for eight-yards and an Irish first down and then he finished the 60-yard drive with a 10-yard TD run to increase the Dublin lead to 21-0 with 9:54 remaining in the first half.

The Bulldogs gained a first down on a Cloud pass to Kodie Cortez for nine-yards, but the Bulldogs had to punt on fourth down.

Dublin started at the Irish 33 and on fourth down and six the Irish faked a punt and gained 21-yards for a first down. Martin completed a 15-yard pass to Tyler Strickland for a first down and Greg Jones ended the 67-yard drive with a 15-yard TD run making it 28-0 with 1:29 to play in the first half.

The Bulldogs went three and out and a 27-yard punt was returned for 52-yards and a TD by Kendell Wade with 24 seconds remaining in the half to give Dublin a 35-0 lead at half.

Third Quarter

The Bulldogs opened the second half running three plays and then punting. Dublin scored on a 47-yard pass from Martin to Tyler Strickland and it was 42-0 Dublin with 8:11 to play in the third quarter.

Cloud completes two passes for first downs- 32-yards to Lynn and 23 to Ashlee Ashley. D.J. Mincey ended the drive with a five-yard touchdown run. Cloud threw a pass for the two-point conversion and the Dublin lead was 42-8 with 4:14 to play in the third quarter.

Fourth Quarter

Toombs was stopped on a fourth down and three play and Dublin took over at the Bulldog 36. Martin ended the short field drive with a five-yard pass to Strickland. It was 49-8 Irish with 5:29 left in the game.

The Bulldogs scored the final touchdown on a 10-yard run by Mincey. The two-point conversion run failed and the Dublin lead was 49-14 with 1:55 to play.

Toombs County’s season came to an end on an incomplete pass in the end zone.
