In the first of three football meetings between Toombs County and Vidalia, the sixth grade Toombs County Middle School Bullpups scored a third quarter touchdown and a conversion run to win 7-6 in Lyons. Meanwhile, in Reidsville, the older Bullpups were driving for a tie. However, TCMS ran out of time and came up 17 yards shy of scoring a TD in a 14-6 loss. The young Bullpups are 2-0-1 and the seventh and eighth grade team is 2-3.
Sixth grade Bullpups- Vidalia scored a second quarter touchdown, but failed on the conversion run to take a 6-0 lead. In the third quarter TCMS drove 70 yards and Silas LaGrant scored on a five-yard run and then ran the conversion in for the 7-6 lead.
Seventh and eighth grade Bullpups- Reidsville put together a long scoring drive on it’s first possession and scored on a five-yard run on the play after converting on a fourth down and one play from outside the six. The two-point conversion was stuffed by Brannon Usher and several other Bullpups.
The Bullpups changed their offensive tempo on their first possession of the second half. They picked up the pace and went on a sixty-eight yard drive. Chandler Lynn was the primary back on the drive and he broke off a 30-yard run and took the ball to the five yard line and scored two plays later on a powerful five-yard run. The Pups two-point run was stopped at the line of scrimmage. With 43 seconds remaining in the third quarter the game was tied at 6.
A long kick off return set Reidsville up for a 46-yard scoring drive which decided the game. The game-winning touchdown was scored on a 13-yard run. The quarterback kept the ball and crossed the goal line, near the pylon, for two points giving Reidsville a 14-6 lead with six minutes to play in the game.
The Bullpups fumbled the ball and Reidsville grabbed it. However, TCMS forced a punt and with 3:12 to play in the game the Pups took control of the ball at their 17. Toombs drove 66 yards with Lynn following his offensive line on some tough runs. On the final play of the game Reidsville tackled Chandler at the 17.
