TCHS Net Dawgs earn 4th straight trip to state and beat Islands for 3rd place in Region 1 AAA

The Toombs County volleyball team accomplished two major tasks on Saturday in the Region 1 AAA Tourney at Beach High School in Savannah. The Net Dawgs qualified for the GHSA State Tournament for the fourth straight year and the girls, for the first time this season, beat a team above them in standings. TCHS knocked off second seeded Islands in three set- 25-17, 10-25 and 25-23 to finish third in the region tourney. The two teams played three times during the regular season and Islands won a three-setter in a season opening tourney in Savannah and the Lady Sharks swept Toombs in straight sets in two other matches.

“Our girls just played smart volleyball and hustled and did whatever it took to get the ball over the net and force Islands to make digging and hitting errors,” head coach Brad Braddy said. “Tanesha Rice successfully made two critical serves at the end to close out the last set. The team did not let mistakes get them down and we had alot of girls make great plays at critical points in the match.”

Toombs opened the tourney with a 25-14 and 25-15 win over Savannah High which qualifed the Net Dawgs for more post season play. In their next match TCHS took on the tourney’s top seed Savannah Arts. The Lady Panthers entered the tourney with a 25-8 record. For the first time in three matches against Arts this season, the Net Dawgs hit double-digits in both sets losing 25-12 and 25-10. The girls did score 21 points against the Lady Panthers in the first set of a home match. Savannah Arts beat Southeast Bulloch for the region title.

TCHS will play Haralson County in the opening round of the state tourney on Wednesday. Haralson is the second seed from Region 5. The game will be played in Tallapoosa, which is located north of I-20 and Carrollton- 245 miles from Toombs County High School.

Four Net Dawgs were named to the Region 1 AAA All-Region Team- Shyann Davis (2nd year) and Breanne Stanley both were named to the first team, Katelyn Atchison made the second team and Katelyn Grimm was honorable mention.
