In Game One against the Jeff Davis Yellow Jackets, the Toombs County High School baseball team had a comeback victory after a rocky start and won 6-5.
Offensively, the Bulldogs had twice the number of hits the Yellow Jackets did. So why was the game so close? Defensive errors. After coming off of an errorless game against the Benedictine Cadets it seemed as though the pressure, of what is said to be the toughest region in the state, momentarily got to the Bulldogs. However, TCHS rallied and came back and won the game on a walk off hit by Junior Jason Dukes.
The Bulldogs gave up two runs in the top of the second. Yellow Jacket Center Fielder Cason Clance had a two run RBI single scoring Matthew Glass who reached on an error and Trenton Clance who reached on a walk. Both runs were unearned for JD.
TCHS gave up another in the third on a passed ball with two down.
The Bulldogs scored a run in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by Freshman Trayvone Harris scoring Senior Chandler Lynn who reached on an error.
Going into the fourth, the game was 3-1 Jeff Davis. JD did not score a run in the innings. TCHS scored a run in the bottom of the inning on a ground ball by Junior Kodie Cortez. He scored Junior Jason Dukes who reached on an error.
JD scored another in the top of the fifth on a homer by first baseman Hamp Hayes. TCHS scored three in the bottom of the fifth. Senior Chase Musselman reached on a base hit and then Senior Gray Stephens drove him in on a RBI double. Harris was up to bat and hit a fly ball to right which was missed and scored Stephens. After a groundout Dukes hit a RBI single scoring Harris. The score was 5-4 TCHS.
In the sixth Jeff Davis answered by scoring a run on a passed ball. The Bulldogs did not score in the bottom of the inning so the game was tied 5-5 going into the seventh.
JD did not score a run in the top of the inning. Instead Junior pitcher Logan Knight and his Bulldog defense had a three up-three down inning.
The bottom of the seventh started with a strikeout. With one down, Harris reached on a base hit. Senior Alex Gordy reached on an error and that brought up Dukes. Dukes hit the ball to the shortstop and on an error scored Harris from third and ended the game on a walk off.
Junior Logan Knight pitched the entire game. Knight allowed four hits and gave up five runs of which one was earned. He gave up three walks and had two strikeouts.
Game 2 has been rescheduled for Wednesday, March 24 at 6 in Jeff Davis. The game will be live on Y-101 100.9 and streamed on our Youtube page.
