September 5, 2020 the Dodge County Indians, made the trip from Eastman and met the Toombs County Bulldogs for some exciting and hard hitting football in the Pit. This game was a victory for all who participated and attended the game. The 2020 off season has been one to forget although we all know we never will. With the losses of Bulldog Legend Barney Bonfield, Bulldog Senior Julio Almanza, and Friday we learned of the passing of Georgia High School Icon, Tommy Palmer. Then we have battled the Covid pandemic. We watched baseball and soccer seasons get cancelled. There were no OTA’s and no preseason games. The season that we all prayed for continued to get pushed back, and we all feared that we may not get a football season. When Toombs County Placekicker, Julian Marin-Vital, teed up the ball on the 40 yard line and kicked the ball off into the summer night, we had our season and for the next 48 minutes everything that had been wrong, seemed normal again. In the 1st Quarter, Dodge and Toombs exchanged punts as both teams looked defensively sound and crisp. In the second quarter, Dodge appeared to try and open up the passing game. Senior DJ Mincey picked off a Dodge County pass on the Dodge County 40 yard line that swung the momentum toward the Bulldogs who drove down the field and scored on a 1 yard run by Senior Quarterback, Chandler Lynn. Marin-Vital added the extra point to give Toombs County the 7-0 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, Dodge County’s Keldrick Beck took the kick on his own 12 yard line and scampered 88 yards to the endzone for a Dodge County Touchdown. Dodge went for a 2 point conversion and failed leaving the scored at 7-6 in Toombs favor. The two teams continued to battle back and forth and exchanged punts again before heading to the locker room at the half with Toombs up by a single point.
Toombs received the ball to start the second half. Toombs put together a long and physical drive that saw almost 8 minutes leave the clock and finished with a 1 yard-touchdown by Senior Running-back, Brannon Usher. Marin-Vital added the extra point and the score was 14-6 Toombs County. The first drive of the second half seemed to completely wear down the Dodge defense. The third quarter ended with Toombs on top 14-6. The fourth quarter began and so did the fireworks from both teams offensively. On the first play of the 4th quarter, Lynn kept the ball and raced down the Bulldog sideline covering 40 yards for a touchdown. The point after failed, leaving the score at 20-6 Toombs. Dodge County took the ball on their next possession and pieced a drive together that landed them on the Bulldog 33 yard line with a little over 6 minutes left in the game. On a 4th down play, Dodge Quarterback Hunter Kirkley found Keldrick Beck in the endzone for the touchdown. Dodge made good on the point after making the score 20-13. On the next Bulldog drive, Toombs offense stalled and Marin-Vital entered the field and punted the ball away. The long, high punt was fielded by a Dodge returner and returned toward the Bulldog sideline. Toombs County’s Dawson Brantley knocked the ball loose and Logan Landrum jumped on the ball giving Toombs County the ball back deep in Dodge territory. Mincey slid into the endzone for a Bulldog Touchdown but a muffed point after snap kept the score at 26-13. Dodge County refused to go away and on the next possession utilized a reverse and caught the Bulldog defense off guard and Tyrese Johnson raced 70 yards for a Dodge County Touchdown. The point after made the score 26-20. Toombs would secure the kickoff and drive up to mid field. Usher took a handoff 31 yards into Dodge Territory and that’s where the clock hit zero. Usher finished the night with a career high 163 Yards on the ground.
Toombs County ( 1-0) is on the road Friday Night, September 11, in Reidsville to face the Tattnall County Battle Creek Warriors out of Region 1 AAA. Tattnall lost to Claxton last Friday Night 28-16.
