Julio Almanza- he wore #77 and #20 for the Toombs County Bulldogs

Julio Almanza was a two-sport athlete for the Toombs County Bulldogs. He wore #77 for the varsity football team and #20 for the soccer team. Julio passed away at the age of 16 due to injuries sustained in a car accident in which he was the passenger.

Julio Almanza, age 16, of Lyons, passed away on Tuesday, March 3, 2020 due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Julio was a native and a life-long resident of Toombs County. Julio was a very brilliant, vibrant and out going young man who had a huge passion for sports. He participated in many sports at Toombs County High School to include football, soccer, and wrestling. When Julio was not active in sports, he enjoyed and loved spending his time with his loving family. Julio was a beautiful child gone to soon from this world, loving family and friends. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Julio is preceded in death by a baby brother Angel Almanza, Paternal Grandparents, Socorro & Rosa Almanza and one family friend Santiago Hernandez.

Julio is survived by his loving parents, Ramon &Oralia Almanza of Lyons; three brothers, Ramon, Juan, & Wilmer Almanza of Lyons; twin sisters Rosa (Octavio) Castanon and Sandra (Heliodoro) Calixto; Maternal Grandparents, Antonio and Celia Garcia; four nieces, Stella Calixto, Alexia Castanon, April Almanza, and Emma Perez; and three nephews, Nicholas Almanza, Leonard Castanon and Lucas Perez.

Visitation for Julio Almanza will be held on Thursday March 5, 2020 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the Toombs County High School Auditorium with a Rosary Service scheduled at 6:00 pm with Father Ben Dallas.

A Catholic funeral service will be held on Friday March 6, 2020 at 2:00 pm at Booster Stadium (The Pit) in Lyons with Father Ben and Chaplain Steven Toole Officiating.

Interment will follow in the Lyons City Cemetery.

Ronnie L. Stewart Funeral Service Vidalia Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Remembering Julio

Bulldog Football

On the football field Julio was a kicker who also wanted to play on the line of scrimmage so he could play on Friday nights. His first chance to play on a Friday night was at Bacon County and he made 3-of-his-4 extra points and he ended the first half with a 34-yard field goal. Julio also made two tackles on special teams.

Julio also kicked and played defense for the junior varsity team and in a game at Tattnall  County he had one of the best tackles of the day.

Back in the spring of 2019 Julio was the place kicker in a scrimmage game against Johnson which was played in Savannah and he scored the first points of the second half on a 32-yard field goal. It was the first time he kicked a field goal in a game situation.

Bulldog Soccer

On the soccer field Julio scored three goals in 2019 for a team that made it to the Sweet 16. He scored single goals against Bryan County, Swainsboro and Bleckley County. He also had an assist in a playoff win at Dublin. This season he had assists in games against Bryan County and Woodville-Tompkins.
