During the regular season the Toombs County Lady Bulldog softball team lost to Bryan County twice- 7-2 at home and 11-3 on the road. However, all season long head coach Sam Sapp had confidence that his team would match up well with the Lady Redskins if they met in the Region 2 Tournament.
In game one of the three game series, in Pembroke, Bryan County run-ruled TCHS 11-3 in five innings. However, the Lady Bulldogs rebounded and won the second game of the doubleheader 7-5. In game three Bryan County opened up a 6-2 lead going into the bottom of the sixth and that is when Toombs County scored five times to win the game 7-6 advancing the Lady Bulldogs to the GHSA State Tournament for the first time since 2005.
The bottom of the sixth inning opened with Krista Cantwell getting hit by a pitch and then Rilyn Fitzgerald reaching on an error which scored Cantwell. Lily Mosley also reached on an error and Amya Bullard was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After a strikeout to make it one down the top of the order came to the plate. Riley Lumley singled to center field to score courtesy runner Alexa Ledford to cut the Bryan County lead to 6-4. K.K. Mobley tripled and drove in three runs to put the Lady Bulldogs up 7-6.
In the top of the seventh inning Cantwell wrapped up her complete game by retiring Bryan County three-up, three-down on a ground ball to Ziayah Griffin at third base, a fly ball to Jesslyn Smith in left and a fly out to the team’s only senior right fielder Lexi Martin. In her seven innings in the circle Krista allowed seven hits and just one earned run with two strikeouts and five walks.
