Toombs County senior Ricardo Santana has had one of the most decorated sports careers in the school’s history. Currently he is playing soccer for a Bulldog team which advanced into the Sweet 16.
In the past Ricardo has led the TCHS cross country team with a second place finish at state as a junior and seventh as a senior.
However, it is in the sport of wrestling where the Santana name has really stood out state wide. Ricardo placed third as a freshman at state and then reeled off three straight championships. He won 214 career matches at TCHS and went 59-0 in his senior season.
Those numbers and his performance and ability have earned Ricardo a scholarship to continue wrestling at Newbery College in South Carolina.
Newberry is a NCAA Division 2 school which takes wrestling seriously. At the most recent national tourney Newberry finished seventh with three All-Americans including Isiah Royal (Effingham County High School) who finished second at 141 pounds. The Wolves are coached by Cy Wainwright who took over the program in 2016. He is the only undefeated national champion wrestler in Newberry College history,
