Dawson Brantley pitched a five-inning no-hitter and hit a first inning home run over the fight field fence as the Toombs County Middle School Bullpups defeated Portal 9-1 in the first round of the playoffs.
The Pups advance to the semifinals and they will play on Thursday at 4 p.m. at home.
Brantley, who struck out seven batters- six looking, opened the game with a three-up, three-down in the first which included two called strike three’s.
In the second he walked the leadoff hitter and yielded a run on a sacrifice fly to left. He closed the inning with a pair of strikeouts.
The third inning began with a backwards K and included a ground out to third base and a fly ball to left.
In the fourth Dawson struck out one batter and induced a pop up to second and a fly ball to center. Brantley handled the fifth fielding two grounders and then he he struck out the final batter to end the game.
The Bullpups scored seven runs in the first inning and two in the third.
Zeke Barnett went 1-for-3 with three stolen bases and one run scored, Ashton Luke 1-for-2 with a walk, a run scored and a stolen base, Carson Braddy 1-for-2 with a walk, a run scored and a stolen base, Will Watts 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored, Brantley 2-for-3 with a homer and a single, Lucas O’Conner 1-1 with two runs scored and Jesus Quintero 2-for-2 with two doubles and two runs scored.
