On the last day of sub-region play the Toombs County Middle School Bullpup baseball team avenged their only region loss, claimed the sub-region championship and honored 11 8th graders on their Celebration Day. A 10-3 win over Bryan County was a perfect way to end the day before a big home crowd.
The Bullpups finish 5-1 in the sub-region and 11-7 overall. Bryan County falls to 4-2 in the sub-region. On Thursday, April 11 TCMS will play host to Portal at 4 p.m. and then on April 16 Portal will return to Lyons for the first round of the playoffs.
The Pups took control of the game in the first two innings scoring two runs in the first and five in the second. Bryan County scored a run in the third and two in the fourth to cut the TCMS lead to 7-3. The Bullpups scored their final three runs in the fourth.
Three TCMS batters had multi-hit games. Leadoff hitter and left fielder Zeke Barnett went 2-for-4 with three runs scored, cleanup hitter and catcher Willl Watts went 2-for-4 with a double and number seven batter and center field Bryar Douberly also went 2-for-4 with a double.
Ashton Luke went 1-for-3 with three stolen bases and three runs scored, Neal Braddy 1-for-4 and Lucas O’Conner 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base. Carson Braddy and Dawson Brantley each stole a base and scored a run and Jesus Quintero walked and scored a run.
On the mound Gavin Hall was the winning pitcher. He threw five innings and allowed two hits and three earned runs with six walks and four strikeouts. O’Conner was the closer and he handled the final two innings allowing one hit with two strikeouts and one walk.
