Basketball Bulldogs go to state seeded 4th out of Region 2

The Toombs County Boys basketball team entered the Region 2 Tournament- at Vidalia High School- seeded sixth on a Tuesday and on Saturday after a 78-26 loss to Metter they left as Region 2’s fourth seed in the GHSA State Tournament. A 58-52 win on Wednesday over Swainsboro clinched the state tourney spot for the Bulldogs while a 60-39 loss to Vidalia knocked the Bulldogs down to the third place game.

Woodville-Tompkins beat Vidalia 58-46 in the championship game to earn the number one seed, Vidalia is second and Metter third.

In the first round of the state tourney Region 2 matches up against Region 3. In the opening round Toombs County will play at Northeast (Macon). Northeast beat Southwest (Macon) 48-43 and Washington County 55-53 to win the Region 2 Championship.

Northeast is 21-5 entering the state tourney. The Raiders feature three double-digit scorers. Darius Dunn, a 6-2 160 pound senior, is the leading scorer averaging 17.1 points, 7 rebounds and 2.8 assists. He scored 17 and 25 points in the region tourney. For the season he is shooting 47% from the field, 29% on 3-pointers and 75% at the free throw line.

Camrone Cherry,  a 6-3 170 junior, scores 14.5 per game with 5.5 rebounds. He shoots 50% from the field, 31% outside the arc and 50% at the line. Ty’ree Gilbert, a 5-11 150 pound senior, averages 10.2 points per game.

In other Region 2 versus Region 3 matchups Southwest travels to Vidalia, Dublin heads down I-16 to face Woodville-Tompkins and Metter plays at Washington County.
