Bulldogs rule Area 1 AA Tournament with 8 individual champs

The Toombs County Bulldogs took 12 wrestlers to the Area 1 AA Tournament at Jeff Davis and all 12 qualified for sectionals at Toombs County High School on February 8 and 9. The Bulldogs claimed eight area championships won by Jose Balderos, Cruz Arreodondo, Martin Santana, Ricardo Santana, Chandler Lynn, Demetrius Owens, Jonathan Morales and Rolando Tinoco. Blake Hall and DeVante Willis both finished second, Isaiah Wright placed third and Arael Rodriquez fourth.

The Bulldogs took the team championship scoring 242 points, Vidalia was second with 214.5 and Jeff Davis third with 175. Their sixth straight area traditional team championship. They have also won the area dual championship six straight years.

106 pounds- Jose Balderas (junior) won an area championship. He had a bye in the quarterfinals, pinned Berrien County’s Caleb Haley in just 18 seconds in the semifinals and pinned Jesse White (Jeff Davis) with 15 seconds remaining in the first period in the finals. Balderas heads to sectionals with a 46-10 record.

113 pounds- Cruz Arredondo (senior) won an area championship. He had a bye in the quarterfinals, pinned Colton Mitchell (Berrien County) in 19 seconds in the semifinals and won the championship with a 12-0 majority decision over Jeff Davis’s Matthew Phillips. Cruz takes a 55-2 record to sectionals.

120 pounds- Blake Hall (sophomore) finished second. He had a bye in the quarterfinals and defeated Vidalia’s Noah Tippett 12-7 in the semifinals. In the finals Fitzgerald’s Kevin Martin remained undefeated (30-0) with a pin 23 seconds into the second period. Hall moves on to the sectionals with a 36-13 record.

126 pounds- Martin Santana (junior) won an area championship. Martin had a bye in the quarterfinals, pinned Vidalia’s Robert Allen 28 seconds into the second period and pinned Fitzgerald’s Jarrett Young with 40 seconds remaining in the second period in the championship. Martin is 43-7 heading to sectionals.

132 pounds- Ricardo Santana (senior) won an area championship. Santana, who dropped from 138 to 132 pounds for this tourney and the rest of the season, had a bye in the quarterfinals. He pinned Brian White (Jeff Davis) in 51 seconds in the semifinals and then pinned Chance Mitchell (Fitzgerald) 35 seconds into the second period to win his fourth area championship. Ricardo is 56-0 heading to sectionals.

138 pounds- Arael Rodriquez (junior) finished fourth. In the quarterfinals he pinned Swainsboro’s Miguel Rodriguez with 39 seconds left in the second period and then he was pinned by Vidalia’s Caleb Cook 34 seconds into the second period. In the consolation bracket Rodriquez received a bye and then lost to Bradley Owens (Jeff Davis) 10-4 in the third place match. Arael goes to sectionals with a 30-22 record.

152 pounds- Chandler Lynn (sophomore) won an area championship. He received a bye in the first round, pinned Bacon County’s C.J. Preston with eight seconds remaining in the second period in the semifinals and defeated Caden Taylor (Berrien County) 12-7 in the finals. Lynn is 31-8 going to sectionals.

160 pounds- Demetrius Owens (senior) won an area championship. He received a bye in the quarterfinals, pinned Berrien County’s Courson Taylor 49 seconds into the first period in the semi’s and pinned Vidalia’s Dawson Campbell with 31 seconds left in the first period in the championship. Owens is 13-3 going to sectionals.

182 pounds- Jonathan Morales (senior) won an area championship. He had a bye in the quarterfinals, pinned Angel Mendezo (Jeff Davis) with 19 seconds left in the semifinals and won a 12-10 decision over Lawson Paradice (Vidalia) in the finals. Jonathan takes a 38-9 record to sectionals.

195 pounds- Isaiah Wright (senior) finished third. He had a bye in the quarterfinals and lost to Alex Vasquez (Jeff Davis) 9-5 in the semifinals. In the consolation bracket Wright received two more byes and then in the third place match he pinned Metter’s John Simmons 41 seconds into the second period. He is 31-12 going to sectionals.

220 pounds- DeVante Willis (junior) finished second. He had a bye in the quarterfinals, pinned Vidalia’s Zack Edwards with 46 seconds left in the first period in the semifinals and then lost to Fitzgerald’s Dequavion Harper 7-3 in the finals. Willis is 29-11.

285 pounds- Rolando Tinoco (senior) won an area championship. He received a bye in the quarterfinals, pinned Swainsboro’s Matthew Hancock 44 seconds into the first period in the semifinals and he won a 6-1 decision over Jaden Wheeler (Berrien County) in the finals. Rolando is 46-7 going to sectionals.
