The Toombs County Bulldogs reeled off four straight pins to open up a 33-0 lead over Dade County and they finished the dual with two more pins to defeat the Wolverines 53-24 to take third place in the AA GHSA State Duals Tournament in the Macon Centreplex.
“As a coach you are always worried you get a team you dominated in the quarterfinals (59-16) and you think are we going to be focused to finish the deal and they came out and absolutely took care of business,” head coach Bill Benton said. “We were up 33-0 and got to enjoy that dual a little bit. It is the sign of a great team to rally after being heart broken and to come back and take third . I just can’t be more proud of the coaches and the kids with the way they handled that adversity. What we talked about at the end of this day in this life we graduate these guys and they move on they are going to be hit in the mouth kind of like we were. I told them it was a life lesson and I couldn’t be prouder of the way they responded.”
Social Circle defeated Elbert County 42-26 to win a fifth straight AA state championship. The other champs include Commerce (A), Jefferson (3A), Woodward Academy (4A), Woodland (5A), Valdosta (6A) and Camden County (7A).
