One week after the Toombs County Bulldog wrestling team defeated Vidalia 45-20 at Jeff Davis High School to take a sixth straight Area 1 Duals Championship, the Dawgs squared off with their rival in the consolation semifinals of the AA GHSA State Duals Tournament at 9 a.m. in the Macon Centreplex and Toombs won by a similar score of 45-24.
The Bulldogs will wrestle Dade County for third place in the tourney. Dade knocked off Pepperell 45-31 in the other consolation semi. Toombs opened up the tournament in the quarterfinals defeating Dade 59-16.
“It was a short turnaround and then we had to go back and regroup (after the tough loss to Elbert County in the semifinals) The fact that we got to wrestle our rivals the first round the next day probably helped them get motivated,” head coach Bill Benton said. “We dualed those guys in the area and they just hung around awhile. Getting to wrestle those guys probably got them a little more focused than ordinary. I thought we really, really wrestled a pretty good dual against Vidalia. We were ahead in a couple of matches and wound up getting beat, but overall I thought we wrestled really well in that dual.”
