The Jeff Davis High School basketball teams took a pair of Region 2 basketball games in Hazlehurst from Toombs County. JD won the girls game 42-30 and the boys game 71-55.
The Lady Bulldogs trailed 10-8 after the opening quarter. K.K. Mobley, who led TCHS with 15 points, scored on a lay up with 30 seconds remaining in the first quarter and then hit a shot in the lane which just beat the first quarter buzzer.
In the second quarter Calvnika Davis nailed a 3-pointer and LiliAnn Pittman hit a bank shot to tie the game at 14-all with four minutes to play in the first half. The Lady Yellow Jackets scored the final five points of the opening half and led 19-14 at the break.
Mobley opened the third quarter with a four-point run which cut the JD lead to 22-20. However, from that point on the Lady Jackets gradually pulled away leading 32-23 after three quarters and Jeff Davis won the fourth quarter 10-7.
Davis scored 5 points for TCHS, Pittman 4, Davis 3, Amya Bullard 2 and Ziahya Griffin 1.
The Lady Bulldogs are 9-7 overall and 5-6 in the region. Jeff Davis is 4-5 as both teams battle for fourth place in the region. The Lady Yellow Jackets will have the tie-breaker against Toombs because they also won a 46-43 overtime game in Lyons earlier in the season.
The Bulldogs got off to a good start in their game and they opened up an 18-10 lead. Drekari Jones and Karis Harden each scored a quick 7 points as the two combined to score 14 of TCHS’s first 23. A Harden 3-ball gave Toombs a 23-16 lead with five minutes to play in the first half.
However, the Yellow Jackets have a Division 1 prospect in 6-5 junior Jaqueze Kirby and he has an all-around game. He can score inside and outside and also set up his teammates with creative passes.
Kirby made two field goals and swished a 3-pointer to pull Jeff Davis to within two-points and then his two-hand slam gave him 19 points and propelled the Yellow Jackets to their first lead of the night at 26-25.
Jeff Davis closed the half with a 14-0 run and led 34-25 at the intermission.
In the second half Tyquan Toby and Tekelia Baker each scored a bucket to cut the Yellow Jacket lead to 34-29. Kirby scored 18 second half points giving him a total of 37 for the game. He hit a 3-ball which pushed the Jacket lead to 14 points in the third quarter. A Jones 3-pointer pulled the Bulldogs to within 10 points. However, the fourth quarter began with Jeff Davis leading 50-37.
In the final eight minutes Kirby tapped in two JD misses and he finished his dominating performance with two big dunks.
The Bulldogs drop to 8-9 and 2-7 in the region. Jeff Davis is 14-6 and with a 6-3 region record is tied with Swainsboro for third place behind 8-0 Woodville-Tompkins and 7-2 Vidalia.
