Lady Bulldogs come back and pull out an OT win

Despite trailing 15-5 after the first quarter and 23-12 at half, the Toombs County Lady Bulldogs rallied in the second half and controlled overtime to beat St. Vincent’s 46-43 in a stand alone Region 2 game in Lyons.

“We just weren’t hustling and basically we weren’t competing,” head coach Melody Walker said about the first half. “So I sat a couple of people down and let some of the reserves play. They hustled and we rallied back to get closer. We didn’t give up in the second half and that is what made the difference.”

One Lady Bulldog in particular took control of the situation on the court as TCHS outscored St. Vincent’s 11-3 in the third quarter and 14-11 in the fourth. “Calvnika Davis was the main ingredient. Her energy level never went down. She and LiliAnn Pittman were able to step up and be leaders. Calvnika kept talking to the girls and demanding more from the girls. She showed a leadership tonight that I haven’t seen from her in the three years I have been coaching her. Because of her energy and her expectations of her teammates, they had to step up. She didn’t give them a choice.”

The Lady Bulldogs built up a small fourth quarter lead, but then the Saints came back to tie the game and send it to overtime. “We were up by two or three or four and then we got back on defense and didn’t stop the ball and gave them layups. That was the thing that got it to overtime.”

In the four minute overtime session Toombs County outscored St. Vincent’s 9-6. “We hit some big shots and crucial free throws. Calvnika hit a big 3-pointer for us. Ashunti Campbell came off the bench and she came out with some fire and helped turn it around,” Walker said.

K.K. Mobley led Toombs with 23 points. The freshman point guard didn’t score in the first quarter and she had four points at half. In the second half she scored 11 points in the third quarter, 5 in the fourth and 3 in overtime. Campbell scored all 8 of her points in the second half. She had 7 points in the fourth quarter and 1 in overtime. Ziahya Griffin contributed 7 points, Davis 4 and Pittman and Amya Bullard 2 each.

The Lady Bulldogs are 6-3 overall and 3-3 in the region. They are tied for fourth place in the region with Vidalia.

On Saturday both the Toombs County Boys and Girls will play host to Screven County. The game times have changed and now the Lady Bulldogs will play at 3 p.m. and the Bulldogs will follow at 4:30.
