For the second straight December the Jeff Davis Lady Yellow Jackets defeated Toombs County in overtime. Last season, in Hazlehurst, JD tied the game at the end of regulation and won by four-points. On Tuesday night- in Lyons- the Lady Bulldogs led by six at half, but they were outscored 7-4 in overtime in a 46-43 loss.
“We were up and led most of the way and then we were down by one going to the fourth quarter,” head coach Melody Walker said. “We ended up being down by four with a minute left in the overtime. We had some unforced turnovers.”
The Lady Bulldogs, who lost for the first time this season, are 4-1 overall and 1-1 in Region 2 games. Jeff Davis is 3-3 and 1-1.
“The girls are disappointed, but we are going to keep moving because we have too many games to play and I feel like we can compete,” Walker said. “To finish the ball game is important and you can’t take plays off. We took a few plays off because of frustration.”
K.K. Mobley led TCHS with 18 points, Ashunti Campbell had 10, Amya Bullard 6 and Ziahya Griffin, Calvnika Davis and LiliAnn Pittman each scored 2. The Lady Bullogs did not make a 3-point shot while Jeff Davis sank two. Toombs was 8-for-15 at the free throw line and the Lady Yellow Jackets were 3-for-6.
“I thought we broke the press well with our press break. For the most part we got to the basket pretty good and we rebounded well. However, we turned it over at the wrong time and we did not shoot free throws and make layups. We have got to make free throws down the stretch.”
Jaxmine Johnson led Jeff Davis with 14 points. “She gets after it defensively and we left her open in the corner a lot. When we went man we kind of lost her and she hit some key shots she probably hasn’t hit all season.” FeFe Green, a transfer from Bacon County also hit double-digits by scoring 10 points.
