Swainsboro nips Toombs County 21-20 on Senior Night in the Pit

The Toombs County Bulldogs became the first Region 2 team to score offensive points against the Swainsboro Tigers, the first region team to hit double-digits against the Tigers’ stout defense and they almost became the first region team to defeat the region champions. D.J. Mincey raced 20-yards for a touchdown with just 59 seconds remaining in the game to cut the Tiger lead to one-point. The Bulldogs decided to go for two-points and a potential victory. Quarterback Trey Cloud threw a pass to blocking back Caleb Hartley which was knocked away at the lost moment and Swainsboro held on to a 21-20 win over Toombs County on Senior Night in the Pit.

After a scoreless opening quarter the game went back and fourth for the final three quarters. Swainsboro led 7-0, 14-7 and 21-14. The Bulldogs tied the game at 7-all on a one-yard run by Derrick Mincey and they evened it at 14 a piece on Pick-6 30-yard interception return by Ashlee Ashley.

Six Bulldog seniors were honored before and unfortunately one of them had to leave the game in an ambulance with 1:49 left in the game. Demetrius Owens, who head coach Richie Marsh described as being, “The breath of our team, he is the energy” was injured. He was placed on a spine board and taken to Meadows Regional Hospital in Vidalia and then transferred to Memorial Hospital in Savannah. His MRI was clear and he could be released from the hospital in a couple of days.

The win upped the Tigers’ record to 8-2 overall and 6-0 in the region. The Bulldogs will go to the playoffs as the fourth seed from the region with a 5-5 record and 3-3 in the region. Jeff Davis finishes third after a 43-23 win at Metter and Vidalia holds on to second place. The Indians defeated Bacon County 42-13.

The Bulldogs will Dublin in the first round of the playoffs on Friday, November 9 in the Shamrock Bowl. Washington County will take on Vidalia at Buck Cravey Field. Jeff Davis travels to Dodge County and Swainsboro plays host to Northeast.

Toombs County opened the game kicking off to Swainsboro with the Tigers starting at their 27. The Bulldogs started the game defensively with a TFL for a loss of two-yards. Kade Youmans completed a seven-yard pass to Cedric Seabrough. Youmans second pass, on third down and five ,went incomplete. The Tigers punted the ball 36-yards.

Toombs County picked up the first, first down on a 15-yard completion from Trey Cloud to Chandler Lynn. Ashley gained five-yards on a jet sweep run. Cloud was tackled for four-yard loss and an incomplete pass forced the Bulldogs to punt. Lynn punted the ball 44-yards down the Tiger 10.

On the first Tiger play Youmans had a vertical pass intercepted at the Swainsboro 42 by Tyler Heath.

The Bulldogs were called for an illegal block on first down. Owens gained two-yards and Cole Graham caught a pass for 12-yards. On fourth down Lynn punted the ball 22-yards to the Tiger 32.

A bad snap to the QB cost the Tigers 22-yards on the first play. Youmans completed a 10-yard pass. On fourth down a shanked punt went out of bounds at the Swainsboro 33.

Owens gained three and two-yards on two running plays. An incomplete pass made it third down and five at the Swainsboro 28. After a timeout by each team the Dawgs, on fourth down and five, threw an incomplete pass and the Tigers took over at their 28.

R.J. Phillips picked up the Tigers’ first, first down on an 11-yard jet sweep run. He also gained five-more on the next play running off tackle. A third down pass went incomplete and Swainsboro punted the ball to end a scoreless first quarter.

The Bulldogs started the second quarter at their 31. Owens gained five-yards, Cloud lost three and Cloud completed a six-yard pass to Kodie Cortez. On fourth down and one from the TCHS 40, Lynn punted 33-yards to the Tiger 27.

Youmans completed a six-yard pass, had a throw knocked away by Heath and he hit Phillps for a 20-yard gain and a first down. Phillips caught a pass for six and Youmans ran for six and a first down. On second down and 10 Youmans threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Phillips. The PAT was good and Swainsboro was up 7-0 with 7:02 left in the second quarter.

The Bulldogs started a touchdown drive at their 25-yard line. Cloud completed a pass for 23-yards and a first down. Derrick Mincey picked up a second first down on a 14-yard run. A 28-yard catch by Lynn moved the ball down to the on-yard and Mincey scored on the next play. Rafael Perez kicked the extra point to tie the game at 7-all with 3:48 to play in the half. Those were the first points scored against the Swainsboro defense in Region 2 play this season.

Deondre Miles returned a TCHS kickoff 45-yards to the Bulldog 43. Youmans ran for five-yards and Allen four on fourth down and one. The Bulldogs were flagged five-yards for being offsides. An 18-yard pass to Phillips was followed by an 11-yard TD pass from Youmans. The PAT gave Swainsboro a 14-7 lead with :51 to play in the first half.

On the Bulldogs final first half possession, they started at the Tiger 49. Cloud ran for four-yards, but an incomplete pass and a couple of sacks turned the ball over to the Tigers for one final first half play. Youmans threw a deep ball which went incomplete.

The Bulldogs started the second half at their 25. Cloud completed a seven-yard pass to Ashlee Ashley and then Cloud picked up the first down on a short run on third down and one. Mincey gained six and one-yard(s) to make it third down and three. An eight-yard completion to Lynn gave the Bulldogs a first down at the 50. Mincey gained five and Owens one and TCHS punted the ball, on fourth down, to the Tiger 16,

Allen ran for seven-yards and Youmans one and on third down and two. Youmans completed a 30-yard pass to Ja’von Brown for a first down. On fourth down and five Swainsboro faked a punt and a short pass was stopped 2-yards short of the first down on a tackle by Owens.

Toombs County picked up a first down on a catch by Lynn. An illegal procedure penalty put the Dawgs in a hole and they had to punt.

Swainsboro started at it’s 20. The Tigers were called for holding. Two incomplete passes made it third down and 20 from the 10. Youmans threw a pass which was intercepted by Ashley. The senior broke a tackle and ran 30-yards for his first Pick-6 TD. Perez nailed the extra point to tie the game at 14 with no time left in the third quarter.

The Tigers put together a 15-play, 63-yard scoring drive. Phillips ran for a 20-yard first down and Youmans completed a five-yard pass to   Seabrough for a first down. Robert Allen picked up nine-yards and a first down. On fourth down and two, at the Dawg 17, Swainsboro converted a first down on a two-yard run on a double reverse. Youmans finished the drive with 13-yard TD pass to Seabrough on third down and eight. Bell’s extra point lifted Swainsboro to 21-14 lead with 4:46 to play in the game.

On their final possession of the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs picked up two first downs on a run by Tyler Smith and a four-yard catch by Lynn. Owens gained five-yards and then on the next play he was injured. On fourth down and seven Cloud completed a 12-yard pass to Graham for a first down and then on the next play Mincey raced 20-yards for a touchdown. Toombs County went for two-points and the win. Cloud’s pass to Caleb Hartley was knocked away at the last moment. So, with 59 seconds to play Swainsboro was holding on to a 21-20 lead.

The Bulldogs tried an onside kick which was recovered by the Tigers.
