Jeff Davis ends an 8-game losing streak versus Toombs County with a 35-14 win

In an eight-game losing streak against the Toombs County Bulldogs, the Jeff Davis Yellow Jackets were outscored on average by a 40-6 score and four of those Bulldog wins were by a shutout. In fact the last time The Jackets had beaten the Bulldogs was on October 5, 2001 when JD took care of TCHS 21-6 in Hazlehurst. On October 19, 2018- 6,223 days later- the Jackets ended that drought with a 35-14 home win.

The win improved the Yellow Jackets record to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in Region 2. The Bulldogs drop to 5-4 and 3-2. In other region action Swainsboro knocked off previously undefeated Vidalia 15-8 and Metter shutout Bryan County 38-0.

The Bulldogs were hoping for a good start. The last time Toombs County had the lead after the first quarter was in the second game of the season when the Dawgs led Hancock Central 7-0 in the Pit. Since then Toombs trailed Savannah Christian 14-0 after a quarter, was tied 0-0 with Claxton, was down 7-0 at Metter, tied with Bacon County 7-7, trailed Bryan County 7-6 and Vidalia 17-0. Instead of the quick start the Bulldogs were down 14-0 with 5:20 to go in the first quarter.

Toombs County won the toss and elected to kick. The Yellow Jackets fumbled the ball, but recovered it at the Jacket 34.

Emmanuel Rumph ran for seven-yards, fullback Tre Carter carried for two and then Jashaun Kirby for 15 and a first down. Britt Metts completed a pass for 10-yards and a first down to the Bulldog 32. Chandler ended the five-play, 66-yard drive with 32-yards for touchdown run. Ricky Rubio kicked the PAT giving Jeff Davis a 7-0 lead with 9:40 to play in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs went three and out on their first possession on two runs and a pass and then a 3-yard punt set up JD at the TCHS 26. Metts ran for 4-yards and Toombs was called for a personal foul for a late hit giving JD a first down at the 11. Kirby ran for three and four-yards and Austin Wood for two making it fourth down and less than the one. After a couple of timeouts Kirby scored on a two-yard run. The Rubio PAT was good and Jeff Davis had bolted to a 14-0 lead with 5:20 to play in the first quarter.

Toombs County finally stopped JD after one Yellow Jacket first down and a short punt gave the Dawgs the ball at their 42.

Demetrius Owens carried for four and one-yard(s) and then D.J. Mincey took over. The sophomore carried the ball eight straight times for 8 ,8, 8, 6, 9, 11, 3 and 5-yards. He picked up four first downs and scored on a five-yard run ending the 10-play, 58-yard drive. Rafael Perez kicked the PAT and the JD lead was with 6:56 left in the second quarter.

On third down and 10 Metts completed a 45-yard pass and the Yellow Jackets were down at the TCHS 15-yard line. Emanuel Rumph scored on a seven-yard run. The PAT was good giving Jeff Davis a 21-7 lead with 3:42 to play in the first half.

Toombs County drove 70-yards in six plays. QB Trey Cloud threw a 31-yard pass to Chandler Lynn for a first down and then on third down and 13 Cloud tossed a 36-yard TD pass to Lynn. Perez nailed the PAT and with 54 seconds left in the half to chop the Jeff Davis lead to 21-14.

Tyler Heath intercepted a JD pass at the Toombs County 44. Trey Cloud threw a 30-yard completion to Chandler Lynn for a first down. A 15-yard Cloud completion ended the first half at the Yellow Jacket 15.

Neither team picked up a first down on their first possession of the second half. Toombs stopped JD on fourth down and took over at the Bulldog 38. Toombs ran 15 plays which included an amazing nine-yard scramble by Cloud for one of the four first downs on the drive. The Bulldogs had a fourth down and 11 situation at the JD 15. Cloud wound up scrambling for six-yards and was knocked out of bounds near the TCHS cheerleaders and the Yellow Jackets took possession of the ball at their nine-yard line.

Jeff Davis drove 91-yards in nine plays and Chandler scored on an 11-yard run and with the extra point the Yellow Jackets lead Toombs County 28-14 with 8:27 to play in the game.

Aahiyus Allen intercepted a Toombs County pass and returned it to the Bulldog 27. Three plays later the Bulldogs recovered a JD fumble at the TCHS 17. Toombs threw three incomplete passes and Trey Cloud was sacked for a loss of 12-yards and Jeff Davis took over on downs at the Dawg six-yard line.

Austin Wood scored on a six-yard TD run and with the extra point Jeff Davis had a 35-14 lead with 4:51 to play in the game.
