Jamar Smith has played in 18 games for the UTEP Miners and he still hasn’t experienced the thrill of victory since he signed with the FBS Conference USA school after two seasons at Holmes Community College. The Miners 18 game losing streak is the longest current losing streak in the FBS (Division 1). However, the Miners are getting closer to that first victory. In their last three games they have lost by seven points at home to New Mexico State, nine at UTSA and on Saturday night, in their Homecoming Game, by a mere three points- 27-24- to North Texas State. The Mean Green is 5-1. Their only loss was to Louisiana Tech 29-27 and their biggest win was 44-17 at Arkansas.

The Miners, who were playing without their number one quarterback due to an injury, took a 10-7 lead early in the second quarter on a 29-yard pass from Ryan Metz. The game was tied at 10-all half. UNT kicked a field goal and scored a touchdown in the third quarter and opened up a 20-10 lead. However, UTEP scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter on a one-yard run by Metz and a 67-yard pass by the senior QB who is a hometown boy from El Paso. After each score UTEP trailed by three-points. The Miners had a 53-yard field goal blocked in the third quarter and they dropped a catchable pass in the fourth quarter which would have set them up around midfield on their final offensive possession.

Jamar, who once again started at middle linebacker, had his most active game as a Miner. He was involved in 11 tackles- 6 solo and five assists- his FBS career high. His collegiate best is 15 tackles for Holmes on October 13, 2016 when he recorded 12 solo and three assists against Copiah-Lincoln. He also had 12 tackles in two other games that season. Jamar Smith Page

“We showed them much more than they expected,” Smith told KVIA-TV. “And anybody else we’re going against, they should expect the same thing.”
