The 2018 Toombs County Bulldogs continued their transformation into an offensive team that can not only run the ball for nice chunks of yardage, but also one that can make big plays in the passing game. In their 41-7 win at Bryan County, the Bulldog varsity- in three quarters of action- racked up 14 plays which netted 10-yards or more and eight of those plays were good for 20 or more. It is the second straight game in which the starters have tallied eight plays that covered 20 or more yards.
Demetrius Owens scored a pair of touchdowns on runs of five and two-yards and quarterback Trey Cloud threw two touchdown passes in the second quarter- a 24-yard toss to Chandler Lynn and a 40-yard strike to Raekwon Powell. Cloud added a third TD pass in the third quarter on a 21-yard completion to tight end Cole Graham. The Bulldogs also scored on special teams when Dawson Malone ran a fumble by the Bryan County punter into the end zone.
In Toombs County’s eight wins over Bryan County, dating back to the 1998 season, the Dawgs have allowed the Redskins only one TD per game.
The Bulldogs have now won three games in a row and are 5-2 overall and 3-0 in Region 2. The other two region games were also decided by lopsided scores- Vidalia took care of Jeff Davis 43-15 and Swainsboro shutout Bacon County 40-0.

Neither team accomplished much on their first possession of the game. Bryan County picked up five-yards on a running play and the Bulldogs 16 and a first down on a run by Owens. On their second possession Toombs County drove 65-yards for a touchdown. Derrick Mincey carried the ball on the first four plays of the drive (5, 9, 3 and 6-yards) and he picked up one first down. Then Owens took over and collected three first downs (runs of 10, 16, 5, 6 and 5-yards) prior to scoring the TD on a five-yard run on first and goal. He took the handoff from Cloud and slid off to the right avoiding a tackler near the line of scrimmage. The Rafael Perez PAT was no good giving TCHS a 6-0 lead with 3:08 left in the first quarter.
Bryan County answered with a 60-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tyler Stewart to Damaurius Brewer on the last play of the first quarter. The 6-4 senior used his superior height to out jump a Dawg to catch the ball at the TCHS 26 and then Tyler Smith made a leaping try to tackle him, but Brewer raced away for six. The Redskins kicked their PAT to put Bryan County up 7-6. The Bulldogs had stopped the Redskins on a third and eight play forcing Bryan County to punt from it’s 37-yard line. However, TCHS was called for roughing the punter giving the Redskins their first, first down of the game and two plays later they scored.
Toombs County recovered an onside kick at it’s 42-yard line and the Bulldogs drove 58-yards in six plays. Cloud completed a 22-yard pass to Lynn and he also ran for 20-yards to start the drive and then Owens rammed the ball into the end zone from two-yards out. Perez booted the extra point putting TCHS up for the rest of the night. It was 13-7 Dawgs with 10:05 to play in the second quarter.
Bryan County picked up a first down on an 11-yard run and then two plays later fumbled the ball and Toombs recovered at the Redskin 46. On the first play- Cloud threw a 52-yard touchdown pass to Lynn. Cloud rolled out to his right, to avoid pressure from two Redskins, and the lefty threw the ball 14-yards. Chandler caught it at the Bryan County 45. He had two defenders chasing him and one in front of him and at the 14 he began a zig-zag move which helped him get into the right corner of the end zone. The Perez PAT was good giving Toombs a 20-7 lead with 8:29 to play in the second quarter.
Toombs County scored a TD on special teams. The snap to the Bryan County punter went through his hands. He recovered the ball and then fumbled it when he was being tackled by Owens. Dawson Malone scooped it up at the 15-yard line and scored the touchdown. The Perez extra point upped the Bulldog lead to 27-7 with 6:09 left in the 1st half.
