Cole Graham yanks the ball away from the defender
Cole Graham crosses the goal line after his 2nd catch

Toombs County scored it’s first touchdown after a 74-yard drive. Trey Cloud completed three passes. One to wide receiver Chandler Lynn for nine-yards and then two to senior tight end Cole Graham. The first catch netted 30-yards on second down and 15. Graham had to take the ball away from the defender. “While running my route the pass was a little short,” Graham said. “The defender picked the ball in the air, but when he came down I reached for the ball and was able to grab it and tug it out of his hands.”

The second reception was for a 39-yard touchdown. Cloud handled a bad snap on that play and threw a perfect strike. Rafael Perez tacked on the PAT to tie the game at 7-all with 5:27 to play in the first quarter. “When I was running up field the linebacker started running down towards the line. I turned back and looked and saw Trey running out of the pocket, so I looked for open grass and waved my hands to get his attention. He threw a good pass to where the Raiders couldn’t reach it and for me to be able to catch it and run for a touchdown.”

The Bulldogs took the lead for good on special teams. Bacon County recovered a TCHS fumble at the Raider 15 and the visitors went backwards and had to punt on fourth down and 20 at the Bacon five-yard line. Caleb Hartley broke through and cleanly blocked the punt and the ball bounced out of the end zone for a safety giving Toombs a 9-7 lead with 10:30 remaining in the first quarter.

After the free kick and a 17-yard return by Ashlee Ashley, Toombs County started at the Raider 38 and it took five plays for the Dawgs to score. Cloud and Lynn teamed up on a 22-yard first down reception. The pass was intended for Graham and was deflected, Chandler caught the ball while on his back on the ground. D.J. Mincey finished the drive with a 19-yard TD run. D.J. darted to the outside and he broke a tackle inside the five-yard line. The Perez extra point made it 16-7 Bulldogs with 8:30 to play in the second quarter.

The Bulldogs scored their third touchdown on a one-play drive- a 51-yard touchdown pass from Cloud to Lynn. Chandler caught a slant in pass at the Bacon 45 and he veered toward the Raider sideline and ran the ball into the south end zone. Perez missed his first extra point of the season after making 16 straight. The Raiders blocked the kick giving Toombs a 22-7 lead with 6:30 to play in the half.

D.J. Mincey wears the turnover chain after his Pick-6

A defensive touchdown ended the first half scoring. Mincey picked a Brown pass and returned it 54-yards for the touchdown. D.J. ran the ball down the right hash until he got to the Bacon 27 and there he cut across the field scoring his first Pick-6 in the left corner of the south end zone. Perez bounced back and drilled the extra point to increase the Bulldog lead to 29-7 with 4:50 left in the half.

Toombs County almost scored a fifth first half touchdown in the waning moments of the half. Cloud hit Lynn with a 30-yard pass that would have been good for six, but the Dawgs were penalized for having an illegal man down field. Prior to that play the Bulldogs also dropped a ball in the end zone on a Cloud roll out throw.

The Bulldog defense opened up the second half stopping Bacon on three plays and after a 35-yard Raider punt and a seven-yard return by Lynn Toombs started at it’s 47. This time it took the Bulldogs two running plays to score. Mincey picked up 13-yards and a first down and then the sophomore took another handoff from Cloud and D.J. raced 40-yards for a TD. Once again Mincey started his trip to the south end zone by going up the middle and when he arrived at the Bacon 30-yard line he saw a lot of green down the Bulldog sideline so he headed that way and once he reached the 20 he was gone for good. Perez missed the PAT and TCHS had a 35-7 lead with 9:36 to go in the third quarter.

Bacon County blocked a Toombs County punt and ran it into the end zone with 5:17 to play in the third quarter to cut the Bulldog lead to 35-14.

Toombs County scored it’s final touchdown of the night with 1:15 left on the third quarter clock. The Bulldogs picked up three first downs on a seven-yard run by MIncey, a catch by Lynn and a 45-yard snag by senior Raekwon Powell. Demetrius Owens finished the eight-play drive with a two-yard touchdown run. He ran through a whopper of a hole created by Josh Jackson and Chase Miller. Perez nailed the extra point and Toombs County took a 42-14 lead into the fourth quarter.

Bacon County scored a fourth quarter TD against the Bulldog junior varsity on a touchdown pass with 3:55 to play in the game.
