Linebacker Jamar Smith (#29) on the prowl

New Mexico State University and UTEP are separated by only 42 miles. That is why their rivalry is called the I-10 Rivalry. By interstate it takes only 38 minutes to go from one school to another. On September 21 the two schools met for the 96th time in the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas and the visiting Aggies pulled out a 27-20 victory. Jamar Smith Page

Former Toombs County Bulldog Jamar Smith made his second straight start at linebacker for UTEP and the third of his career and he was a part of a wild sequence right before halftime. With the score tied at 10-all, UTEP was driving for a go ahead touchdown. The MIners lost a fumble on first and goal at the New Mexico State eight-yard line. Six plays later, at the Aggie 47, UTEP’s Josh Adkins sacked the quarterback and jarred the ball free. Jamar went to the turf and recovered the fumble. Unfortunately, for the Miners their quarterback was sacked on the next play and he coughed up the ball and New Mexico State returned it 55-yards for a touchdown giving the Aggies a 17-10 lead at half.

UTEP tied the game at 17 in the third quarter and pulled to within 24-20 in the fourth, but the Miners lost their 16th straight game- 12 last season and the first four in 2018 and that is the longest losing streak in FBS football.

Jamar was credited with one solo tackle and six assists. His one-on-one stop came in the first quarter, on a first and 10 play, as he tackled Christian Gibson for a three-yard gain. Smith was in on two tackles in the second quarter and three more in the fourth.
