Due to showers on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday it took the Lyons Midget Boys from Friday to the next Friday to finally win the District 1 Championship at Little Fenway at Partin Park. These 11 and 12 year old boys also had to bounce back from their only loss in the tourney- a 7-2 defeat to rival Vidalia on Thursday in the championship round- with an 8-2 win over their neighbors in the if necessary game.
The second Lyons/Vidalia title game actually started on Thursday with Trayvan Harris belting a 2-run homer in the first inning to give Lyons the lead prior to a big batch of rain moving in to Toombs County. So, the game resumed on a sunny Friday at noontime. Lyons scored five more runs in the fifth inning. Gailan Wilds smashed a two-run double. Kipp Mosley hit the ball to the pitcher and it turned in to a two-run error and Harris smacked another extra base hit- a run scoring double.
In the sixth and final inning (due to the two-hour time limit) Brantley Upshaw and Jesus Quintero each singled and Lyons final run scored on another Vidalia error. Harris, Upshaw and Demetrius Cotler all went 2-for-3, Quintero 2-for-4 and Wilds 1-for-2 with a walk.
Harris also made a major contribution on the mound. He threw 80 pitches in his five innings of work and allowed only two hits with four strikeouts and two walks to earn the win. Upshaw pitched a four-up, three-down sixth with two strikeouts and a ground out.
