One trait of a Brian Fitzgerald coached team over his 14 years as the head man of the program is they play their best ball at the end of the season. Last years team reeled off 12 straight wins in the regular season and the playoffs. The 2018 Bulldogs also finished strong winning four in a row and five out of their last six including Fitzgerald’s final game as the head coach of the Dawgs. Sophomore Trey Cloud pitched a complete-game four-hitter allowing an earned run with five strikeouts and one walk as the Toombs County ended the season with a 6-1 win over Southeast Bulloch at Jacky Jones Field in Lyons.
For Fitzgerald it was his 237th career victory as his final team rallied for an 11-16 record and 6-8 in Region 2 play.
Cloud gave up singles in the first and third and didn’t yield a run until two were down in the top of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly.
The Bulldogs scored single runs in the first and second innings. Senior Martin Stephens singled in a run in the first in his final Bulldog game. In the second Stephens hit a grounder which was misplayed by the shortstop scoring the second Bulldog run.
In a four-run fifth Cloud was hit by a pitch, with the bases loaded, scoring the first run. Chandler Lynn walked with the bases still juiced to make it 4-0. Bryce Deloach singled to left scoring two more TCHS runs.
