Senior Willie Campbell came off the bench in the bottom of the eighth inning, with two outs, and lined a 3-2 pitch into center field scoring senior Noah Anderson in Toombs County’s 6-5 win over rival Vidalia in a two-hour and 40 minute game played at Jacky Jones Field in Lyons. The Dawgs have defeated the Indians six straight times over the past three seasons.
Anderson led off the eighth by walking on a 3-2 pitch. Trey Cloud laid down a bunt and reached on an error while Noah raced to third base. The Indians walked Chandler Lynn intentionally to load the bases with nobody out. After a Dawg strikeout Campell stroked his fourth hit of the season and drove in his first run of 2018.
The Bulldogs had to rally in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to an extra inning. Vidalia’s Alex Sutton was hit by a pitch with one out and the bases loaded in to top of the seventh to give the Indians a 5-4 lead, A Dawg double play on a catch and a throw to third base by center fielder Dalton McBride ended the frame.
In the bottom of the seventh Chandler Lynn walked, Martin Stephens singled and Brock Harrison walked to load the bases with one out. A Cole Graham grounder to short scored Lynn to tie the game at 5-all and send it to extra innings.
Toombs County took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first. Chandler Lynn, Bryce Deloach and Martin Stephens each singled with Martin driving in the first Dawg run. Kyle Knight walked with the bases loaded to score the second run and Anderson was hit by a pitch with the bases full to put TCHS up by two runs.
Vidalia scored two runs in the second inning and one in the third to take a 4-3 lead. Toombs County tied the game in the bottom of the third. Harrison walked, Graham was hit by a pitch and Knight reached on an error scoring Brock to level the game.
There has been a definitive pattern in Toombs County’s six straight wins over Vidalia. In the games played at Greg James Field the Bulldogs have outscored the Indians 36-10 winning 13-0 in five innings in 2017, 9-1 in 2017 and 14-9 earlier this week. In the games played in Lyons each game has been decided by one single run. In 2016 the Bulldogs scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh on an Indian error to win 6-5. Last year TCHS had to hold on as Vidalia scored three in the top of the seventh in a 7-6 Dawg victory. And of course the trend continued in 2018 with the eighth inning victory.
