Historically for the Toombs County Bulldogs to defeat Appling County, in Baxley, it takes a monumental team effort. Unfortunately, the Dawgs didn’t come up with one of those in a 14-4 six inning loss on Friday night. The 0-3 Bulldogs will play host to Brantley County for a doubleheader which begins on Saturday at 11 a.m. on Y-101 Radio and Mixlr with Bryce Braddy on the play-by-play call.
In prior Dawg wins at Baxley. In 2015 Dalton McBride singled to right field to drive in the go-ahead run as Toombs scored eight runs in the seventh inning in a 10-6. In 2011 Blake Butcher hit two doubles and Brian Jernigan drove in the game-winning run, in the eighth, with a swinging bunt which scored Ryan Davis in a 13-12 victory and the season before Javec King struck out 13 batters and allowed only three hits, in his six innings of work on the mound as the Dawgs ruled 13-6.
In the 2018 game the Bulldogs spotted the Pirates three runs in the first inning on no hits. In the second inning two Appling singles and a walk loaded the bases and a second walk plated the the Pirates fourth run.
TCHS scored it’s first run in the top of the third. Kyle Knight and Noah Anderson each walked with Knight scoring on a Brock Harrison base hit. Brock is off to a 4-for-10 start on the season.
With one down in the fourth the Bulldogs loaded the bases. Willie Campbell walked, McBride stroked a base hit and Knight walked for a second time. An Anderson grounder scored two runs and Chandler Lynn tied the game at 4-all with a grounder to third base.
The game began slipping away from the Bulldogs in the bottom of the fourth. Shannon Brown hit a two-run homer over the left field fence to put the Pirates up 6-4. The Pirates scored three more in the fourth, three in the fifth and two in the sixth.
