Bulldogs win another first half before taking down the Yellow Jackets 38-14

The Toombs County Bulldogs continued their season long trend in Hazlehurst. First they win the first half and then they win the game. Against a resurgent Jeff Davis, the Bulldogs built up a 17-0 halftime lead and then they closed the Region 2 game with a 38-14 victory. The Bulldogs are 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the region.

So far this season the Bulldogs have outscored their opponents 71-17 in the first half. Only Telfair County and Bacon County have scored against the Dawgs in the first half. Telfair scored a first quarter touchdown and kicked a second quarter field goal and Bacon scored a a late second quarter TD. East Laurens, Twiggs County and JD didn’t score until the second half against a Toombs County defense which is allowing 12.2 points per game.

The Dawgs have led at half in four if their five games- 3-0 vs. East Laurens, 24-0 Twiggs County, 17-7 Bacon County and 17-0 Jeff Davis. Toombs and Telfair County were tied at 10 at the break.

During a stretch of 33 games from 2013 through early in 2016 the Bulldogs scored only eight first quarter touchdowns. This season through five games TCHS has already scored four first quarter TD’s.

The Bulldogs established, on their first offensive possession, that they were going to be able to control the line of scrimmage and run the football. Toombs ran for a season-high 342 yards and averaged 7.1 yards per carry.

Quarterback Dalton McBride gained 21 yards on runs of 5 and 15-yards and then he handed the ball to Jeidon Sistrunk. The senior broke a handful of tackles on his 39-yard run into the end zone. Rig Tinoco kicked the PAT and Toombs had a 7-0 lead with 10:40 to play in the first quarer.

On their second possession Tinoco finished the drive with a 32-yard field goal giving the Bulldogs a 10-0 lead with 4:43 to play in the first quarter.

Keshawn Morgan ended the only second quarter TCHS scoring drive with a 5-yard run with ninety seconds remaining in the half and TCHS led 17-0 at the break.

McBride scored on a 3-yard run with 5:13 to play in the third quarter and ran in a two-point conversion to up the Dawg lead to 25-0. The Yellow Jackets started a drive in the third quarter which netted points on the first play of the fourth quarter. Britt Metts threw a 5-yard touchdown pass on fourth down to cut the Bulldog lead to 25-7 with 11:51 to play in the game.

McBride ran for a 22-yard touchdown with 7:39 remaining to make it 31-7. Antavion Stegall scored on a 48-yard run for the Jackets to cut the Toombs lead to 31-14 with 6:14 left in the fourth quarter. The final touchdown was scored by Toombs County’s Alex Hunt on a 3-yard run with 3:00 left.

First Touchdown- 3 plays, 60 yards- The Bulldogs took the opening kick off and only needed three plays to score their fourth first quarter touchdown of the season. McBride ran for 5 and 15 yards and then Dalton handed the ball off to Sistrunk and he ran 39-yards for his fourth touchdown of his senior season.

Field Goal- 7 plays, 57 yards- McBride opened the drive with a 26-yard run. Jeff Davis was penalized twice and the Bulldogs were called for holding. After Morgan ran for 8-yards and incomplete pass made it fourth down and Tinco booted the seventh field goal of his senior season.

Second Touchdown- 5 plays, 61 yards- There were two big running plays on this drive. McBride ran for 17-yards and a first down and then Morgan got to the outside and ran for 29-yards. The Yellow Jackets hit Keshawn out of bounds and they were flagged. Morgan ran the ball basically untouched for 5-yards and his fifth touchdown of his senior season.

Third Touchdown- 2 plays, 36 yards- Johnathan Benjamin’s second interception in two weeks set the Bulldogs up at the JD 36. McBride threw a 33-yard pass to Jaquail Boyd down to the 3-yard line and then Dalton ran the ball in for six.

Fourth Touchdown- 7 plays, 70 yards- McBride had two big runs on this quick drive. He ran for 23-yards and a Bulldog first down and then he ran 22-yards for his second touchdown of the game and his fourth of his senior season.

Fifth Touchdown- 6 plays, 22 yards- The Bulldogs recovered a Jeff Davis fumble at the Yellow Jacket 22 and Alex Hunt finished the drive scoring his first varsity touchdown on a 3-yard run.
