Bulldogs vs. Trojans- Will the rematch be as thrilling?

No doubt about it. Last year the most exciting Toombs County Bulldog football game was played at Telfair County. The Dawgs scored 49 points and yielded 35 in a non-region game which was tied at 28-all with 8:28 to play in the third quarter. The Bulldog offense ran the ball 49 times for 475 yards, an average of 9.7 yards. Keshawn Morgan scored a career-high six touchdowns running for a personal best 348 yards. Jeidon Sistrunk also ran for 108 yards and scored one touchdown.

Toombs and Telfair will kickoff on Friday in the Pit at 7:30 p.m. on Y-101 radio and streamed on Mixlr.

For the Trojans quarterback Ian Blankenship led his team on touchdown drives of 80, 83, 77 and 85 yards. All three of those skill position players are back for their senior seasons.

Blankenship is 5-9 and 190 pounds and runs the 40 in 4.6 and he squats 620 pounds. “He’s better than he was last year,” Toombs County coach Richie Marsh said. “The whole team is better than they were last year. There offensive line is very, very physical. He and the running back both are physical runners. They don’t give up easily and they are not tackled too often by one person. They impress me very much with their run game and with their tenacity and their grit. They can still throw the ball, but they don’t throw it as much as they did last year. They are still really good and efficient in their passing game. Their defensive line comes off the ball with low pads, their linebackers chase the ball really well and the secondary is very physical. They get where they are going very fast.”

Through two games they Bulldog running game has not produced a 100-yard rushing game for either senior back.

Unofficial Rushing Stats

Keshawn Morgan 27 carries for 165 yards (6.1)  Long 28  TD’s 2

Dalton McBride 20 carries for 92 yards (4.6)  Long 34  TD’s 2

Jeidon Sistrunk 16 carries for 56 yards (3.5)  Long 7  TD’s 1

“We’ve got to be who we claim to be on the offensive line,” Marsh said. “We have got to continue to get better at that position. We have a bunch of seniors there and we just need to play better to be honest. At the running back position we need to break tackles and we are not getting it done there. We also have to catch the ball. When Dalton throws a catchable ball we have got to make sure we catch it and move the chains. On defense we have got to tackle better.

The Trojans are 1-1 with a 28-0 road win at Savannah High and a 33-21 loss at Bacon County. The Bulldogs are 2-0 and they have knocked off East Laurens 10-8 in Paulson Stadium and Twiggs County 38-6 in Booster Stadium.

The series between the two schools is tied at six wins each. The Trojans haven’t beaten the Bulldogs since 1993 when they shutout Toombs 14-0 in Booster Stadium. Telfair’s last visit to Lyons was in 2002 and the Dawgs took the game 36-14.
