Bulldogs hold on to a 10-8 win over EL in the Erk Russell Classic

An Ervin Mincey sack, on fourth down and 13 from the Bulldog 36-yard line, and with 23 seconds to play, sealed the Toombs County Bulldogs 10-8 season-opening victory over East Laurens in the Erk Russell Classic in Paulson Stadium in Statesboro. The game, which kicked off at 5 p.m., was played in 90 plus degree heat and on artificial turf.

Update- Freshman defensive back Chandler Lynn was injured on a Bulldog punt. He and teammate Ashlee Ashley had an accidental helmet-to-helmet collision on punt coverage. Chandler was taking to the hospital in an ambulance. Father Matt Lynn says Chandler is going to be fine. “Chandler was checked is okay. He suffered from dehydration and a stinger. Thank you all Bulldog country for your concern calls and text’s.” Lynn said.

The Dawgs, who led 10-0 after an 8-yard touchdown run by senior quarterback Dalton McBride with six seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, yielded a one-yard Eriq Cooper touchdown run and a two-point conversion pass with 7:24 to play.

The only points scored in the first half were on a 28-yard field goal by TCHS senior Rig Tinoco, who booted a 28-yard field goal through the center of the tall goal post with 1:21 remaining in the second quarter.

Scoring Drives

First Field Goal Drive- 13 plays, 63-yards- The drive began after the Falcons threw an incomplete pass on fourth down at the Toombs County 36-yard line. After an incomplete pass, Keshawn Morgan ran three straight times for seven and nine picking up a first down and then five more. McBride completed a pass to NyKwan Coleman for 8-yards and a first down. Keshawn was stopped at the line of scrimmage and an incomplete pass made it third down and 10 at the Falcon 36. McBride was tackled behind the line of scrimmage, however, the Falcons drew two penalty flags and the Bulldogs picked up a first down as the ball was placed at the 19-yard line.

Jeidon Sistrunk ran for 4-yards and Keshawn for two more and then McBride ran to the 10-yard line on a 3-yard run. The Falcons were penalized on that play moving the ball to the 5-yard giving TCHS a first down. McBride ran the ball for nearly three yards down to the 2-yard line. But, then Toombs was penalized for five yards back to the 7-yard line. McBride ran for one-yard, Toombs was penalized for 5-yards for delay of game and a slant pass to Coleman was nearly intercepted. On fourth down and goal from the six Tinoco kicked a field goal from the right hash and the 28-yard attempt sailed through the center of the uprights for the first three points of the season.

First Touchdown Drive- 12 plays, 82 yards- The Bulldogs fumbled a punt and East Laurens recovered the ball at the Dawg 22. On fourth down and six the Eagles lined up for a field goal, but they took a time out and decided to pass the ball and Senn’s toss down the middle of the field was high and went incomplete. The Bulldogs took over at their 18-yard line. A Toombs penalty moved the ball back to the 11. McBride was tackled for a 2-yard loss and Sistrunk gained seven. On third down and 13 McBride ran for 21-yards and a first down.

East Laurens was called for offsides and Toombs threw an incomplete pass. Morgan ran for 3-yards and McBride one and it was fourth down and one at the 45. EL was penalized for offsides again giving the Bulldogs a first down. Morgan ran for 2-yards and then he broke free on his longest run of the game and ran 28-yards down the Bulldog sideline to the 18.

Sistrunk came in and ran for 2-yards and McBride for seven. On third and one Sistrunk gained a yard and picked up the first down. On first and goal from the eight McBride faked a hand off and ran toward the right off a block by Mincey. At the 4-yard line Dalton was hit by Travis Bell from the left and Bryce Robinson from the right. McBride ran through the two Falcons and landed in the end zone for six points. Tinoco nailed the PAT.
