Lyons Midget Girls play an eight inning thriller and a 19-18 shoot out

The Lyons Midget Girls softball team opened up their Lyons Youth Tournament with an eight inning thriller. The hometown girls, who trailed Reidsville 3-0 after two innings, tied the game by scoring two runs in the fifth and a run in the sixth. In the two extra innings each team started with a runner at second base. Neither team scored in the seventh inning and Reidsville outscored Lyons 3-1 in the eighth to win 6-4.

In an elimination game which ended after 11:30 p.m. Lyons lost to Appling County 19-18.

Lauren Hattaway, who pitched five straight scoreless innings from the third through the seventh against Reidsville, allowed only five hits and she struck out eight batters. The first year Midget pitcher also fielded her position well and even made a diving catch on the first base line.

Kayleigh Sanders (1-for-2 with a walk) tied the game in the sixth with a two-out single in the sixth. Krista Cantwell went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored and she made some fine plays at short. Lily Keairns went 1-for-3 and she made a diving catch from her third base position.
