Bulldogs will open the 2017 football season in the Erk Russell Classic

The venue for the Toombs County Bulldogs’s season opening game has been shifted from East Laurens to Paulson Stadium in Statesboro. The Bulldogs will now play East Laurens on the second day of the Erk Russell Classic. Kick off is at 5 p.m. on Saturday August 19.

The Erk Russell Classic opens Friday, August 18 with a pair of games- South Effingham versus Tift County and Effingham County takes on Coffee County. Screven County and Bluffton County will follow the Toombs County and East Laurens game. Bluffton beat Screven 32-25 last year in the Erk Russell Classic. The Bobcats played Brookland-Cayce for the South Carolina AAA State Championship and lost 14-7. Their only loss in a 12-1 season. Screven County wound up 11-2. The Gamecocks defeated Toombs County 35-9 in the first round of the GHSA AA State Playoffs and they also knocked off Douglass 28-20 before losing to Callaway 35-34.

The Bulldogs finished 2016 with a 6-5 record after making the post season for the first time since 2008. East Laurens went 1-9 with a 30-22 win at Montgomery County in the third week of the season.

Toombs County opened last season with a 31-17 home win over East Laurens. Keshawn Morgan, with help from his line, grinded out 244 rushing yards on 28 carries and the junior scored four touchdowns on runs 30, 8, 12 and 3 yards. The Bulldog defense recorded at least 12 tackles behind the line of scrimmage.
