The Bulldogs get another shot at Jeff Davis in the GHSA Class 2A Final Four

The last time the Toombs County Bulldogs player a pair of games against the Jeff Davis Yellow Jackets they were in the midst of a four game losing streak that would eventually reach seven straight. The Bulldogs were hitting .247 as a team and their playoff prospects were decreasing.

In a home game, on March 28 against JD, the Bulldogs surged to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and then they didn’t score another run against the Yellow Jackets in the final eight innings of a 5-3 nine inning loss or in the next six innings in a 10-0 loss to them two days later in Hazlehurst.  Game 1 Story  Game 2 Story

The Bulldogs had a chance to win the Lyons game in the eighth. George Lucke singled to open up the frame and Cole Graham bunted the ball down the first base line and reached on an infield hit. Brandon Helton hit the ball up the middle and Lucke tried to score. However, he was thrown out a the plate by a perfect throw by center fielder Hunter Foster. Brock Harrison was intentionally walked with one out  to load the bases and a fly ball to shallow right and a strikeout ended the threat.

Since the two losses to Jeff Davis the Bulldogs lost a second nine inning game at Metter and than they began their current 12 game winning streak. The Bulldogs are hitting .328 during the streak and .335 in the state playoffs heading in to their GHSA Final 4 match up in Hazlehurst against Jeff Davis.

Martin Stephens was 1-for-3 against JD in Lyons

Number nine hitter Martin Stephens has at least one hit in each playoff game and he is batting .611 in the post season. Since the last Jeff Davis game the designated hitter has raised his average for .243 to .329.

Lane Adams pitched six innings an allowed the Yellow Jackets one earned run

On the mound D.R. Meadows is 3-0 in the post season with 1.17 ERA which is actually higher than his .88 for the whole season. Lane Adams is 2-0 with a 2.78 ERA during the tourney and 2.66 during the regular season and playoffs. The Bulldog staff has a 2.08 ERA for the playoffs and 2.86 overall. Laney, Banks County and Dodge County hit a combined .209 against Bulldog pitching.

Since their sweep of the Bulldogs the 28-8 Yellow Jackets have won 15-of-their-last-17 games. The lost to Bleckley County, after beating the Bulldogs in Hazlehurst, and Wayne County- also a Final 4 team. In the state tourney Jeff Davis took care of Screven County 11- and 8-4, Social Circle 5-2 and 3-0 and the Jackets won their only road series at Rockmart 1-0 and 8-1.

The winner of the series in Hazlehurst will play the winner of Bacon County at Elbert County. On Wednesday Bacon County won the first game 3-2 and Elbert took game two 2-1. Game three is Thursday at 3 p.m.
