The Toombs County Bulldogs were suppose to play at Benedictine on Thursday for the Region 2 Soccer Championship. However, the Cadets self-reported using an ineligible player who was 19 years old. So, some Benedictine wins were turned into losses and Bryan County became the Bulldogs opponent for a match in Lyons on Wednesday.
Toombs County scored three goals in the first half and one in the second in a 4-1 victory which sends the Bulldogs to the GHSA State Playoffs as a number 1 seed out of Region 2, guaranteeing the Dawgs home field in the playoffs for the first two rounds.
Gerardo Mendoza scored the first TCHS goal on a header off a free kick from Rig Tinoco just 4:40 into the match. Tinoco scored the next two goals on a short shot off a corner kick with 26:28 to play in the first half and then on a strong shot into the upper 90 of the net with 10:29 to go before the break.
Bryan County scored on a shot 4 1/2 minutes into the second half and then the Bulldogs ended a 32 minute scoring drought with a goal with 19:33 to play in the match. Mendoza scored his second goal on a corner kick. He booted it low and it took one bounce and went straight into the net.
