The second seeded Toombs County Bullldogs beat Armuchee 60-12 in the quarterfinals and Elbert County 39-27 in the semifinals to earn their first ever chance to win a state championship in the GHSA State Team Duals at the Macon Centreplex. On Saturday at 4 p.m. Toombs will meet two-time defending state champion Social Circle. The Redskins spanked Dodge County 70-9 and took care of Fitzgerald 39-24 to earn a chance for a three-peat.
The last time a Toombs County team competed head-to-head for a state championship was in the fall of 2000 when the Lady Bulldogs lost to Irwin County in the title game in slow pitch softball in Columbus.
The last Toombs County team to win a state championship was the 1996 baseball Bulldogs. Those Dawgs excited a huge home crowd by dominating Irwin County 15-0 and 16-5 in the championship doubleheader.
The 1975 Lyons Senior Bulldogs football team won a state championship in the Pit defeating Duluth.
