Keshawn Morgan averaged 11.6 yards a carry on a night in which he was handed the responsibility of running the football 30 times and the end result was a prolific and a memorable performance by the junior. Thanks to total domination by the Toombs County Bulldog offensive line (Cody Fuller, Willie Campbell, Jonathan Quintero, Cameron Panick, Jason Lowe, Treyvon Wiggins, Ervin Mincey and Jaquail Boyd plus the added blocking of Will Fuller, Jimmy Edwards and D.J. Matthews) Morgan amassed 348 yards and scored six touchdowns in a 49-35 Dawg non-region win at Telfair County. Double A Toombs is 2-1 and Single A Telfair is 1-1.
In the East Laurens and Telfiar games combined Morgan has totaled 592 yards on 58 carries and scored 10 touchdowns for an average of 10.2 yards.
When Keshawn wasn’t hammering the Trojan defense or blowing by them another Bulldog junior was also pounding out the yardage. Jeidon Sistrunk ran for 108 yards on 16 carries (6.8 yards per carry) and he scored a touchdown. Only one other Bulldog ran the ball in McRae. Junior quarterback Dalton McBride ran three times for 19 yards and averaged 6.3 yards a touch. The Bulldogs’ final rushing totals were staggering- 49 rushes for 475 yards, an average of 9.7 yards every time a Toombs offensive player touched the football.
Obviously, the Trojans also had a big offensive night. The combination of junior quarterback Ian Blankenship, sophomore running back Brandon Mackey and several talented receivers, especially senior Tyrone Taylor kept the Bulldog defense on edge the whole game. Mackey and Blankenship each ended first half drives with short runs to give the Trojans a 7-0 and a 14-7 lead in the first and second quarters.
The Trojans scored the first touchdown of the game on their second possession. The Bulldogs on their first possession drove 47 yards down to the Telfair 20. On fourth down Rig Tinoco missed off to the left on a 37-yard field goal attempt. From the 20 the Trojans traveled 80 yards. The big play was a 30-yard pass which was caught at the one-yard line by Javonta Wilcox, who managed to hold on to the ball despite having a collision with fellow wide out Cam Smith. After a one-yard loss Mackey ran the ball in from the two to put Telfair up 7-0 with 5:27 to play in the first quarter. Aj Kajrmann kicked the extra point and he also booted through three of his next four attempts.
The Bulldogs tied the game on a drive which began in the first quarter and ended twenty seconds in to the second. The Dawgs have only scored eight touchdowns in their last 33 first quarters dating back to the 2013 season. They scored 16 points in the first quarter of the Hephzibah scrimmage, but none so far in the regular season.
The Bulldogs drove 68 yards with Morgan running for 14 and 19 yards prior to scoring on a four-yard run with 11:40 remaining on the second quarter clock. Tinoco nailed his first of seven straight extra points to tie the game at 7-all.
Telfair regained the lead after an 83-yard drive. A key decision was made during a timeout prior to a fourth down and two play at the Bulldog 12. Before the time out the Trojans were going to kick a field goal. However, after the timeout Telfair put the offense back on the field and Blankenship ran for the first down and then scored a touchdown on a two-yard run. With 7:36 to play in the first half the Trojans were up 14-7.
TCHS answered with a 70-yard scoring drive. Morgan had two 19-yard runs and a 14-yard carry. Sistrunk had a pair of eight-yard runs and the second one of those was good for his first touchdown of the season. Now it was 14-14 with 4:51 to play in the half.
The Bulldogs got the ball back after the Tinoco kick off and two Mackey running plays. On the first carry he picked up a first down, but on the second one he fumbled at the end of the play and the Dawgs recovered at the Trojan 48. Morgan and Sistrunk and the offensive line stomped the ball down field and Keshawn finished the drive with a two-yard TD run with just 41 seconds remaining on the first half clock. The Bulldogs went to the locker room with a 21-14 halftime lead.
The second half began with the Trojans attempting an onside kick and the Anderson brothers (Luke and Noah) combined to secure possession of the ball at the TCHS 46. The Bulldogs took off on a 54-yard scoring drive and Morgan ran the ball 21 yards to score his third touchdown and give his team a 28-14 lead with 8:28 to play in the third quarter.
Telfair responded to the two TD deficit with a 77 yard scoring drive. Mackey ran 55-yards down the Trojan sideline and Blankenship ended the drive, converting on a fourth and three play, with a touchdown pass to Zarian Lowe. The Bulldogs Willie Campbell blocked the PAT and the Bulldogs had a 28-20 advantage with 6:23 to play in the third quarter.
Toombs only punted once in the game on fourth down and six from the Trojan 41. Lane Adams booted the ball 26 yards down to the 15 where the Bulldogs made the tackle. However, Telfair covered 75 of the 85 yards with a Blankenship to Taylor touchdown pass. The two combined on a two-point pass and the game was tied at 28-all with 90 seconds to play in the third quarter.
It took five Morgan runs for the Dawgs to take the lead for good. Runs of 1, 5, 22 and 30 yards set up touchdown number 4- a 17-yard run which put Toombs up 35-28 with 10:57 to play in the game.
Next the Bulldogs got a defensive stop and proceeded to drive 58 yards. Keshawn ran for 18 yards, Jeidon for 18 and Morgan scored his fifth TD on a 27-yard run with 7:26 to play. 42-28 TCHS.
Tinoco kicked the ball down to the eight and a Trojan caught it and went out of bounds. No problem for the home team. Blankenship ran for 60 yards and then threw an 11 yard touchdown pass to Wilcox to make it a one possession game once again at 42-35 Bulldogs with 4:41 to go.
Morgan returned an intermediate kickoff for 33 yards to the Telfair 27 and then he ended his amazing night with touchdown number six- a 13-yard run into the same end zone where he scored touchdown number one with 1:02 to play.
