Former Toombs County Lady Bulldog basketball player Breanna Walker played her third game of her freshman season at Brewton-Parker’s Gillis Gymnasium and she scored a career-high nine points in Coastal Georgia’s 73-41 win over the Lady Barons. Walker and Coastal opened up the season playing in the Brewton-Parker Tournament and beat Vorhees and Morris College and Walker played a combined 32 minutes in those two games and she didn’t score. Breanna nailed an 18-footer early in the second quarter and she hit two short shots in the second half. On the second one she was fouled and she swished the free throw. Walker was 3-for-3 at the line and 3-for-3 from the field in just 10 minutes of action. The nation’s leading high school rebounder in 2014-15, with 22.6 per game, grabbed six boards in Mt. Vernon.

Mariners streak past Brewton-Parker

Mount Vernon, Ga. – The College of Coastal Georgia women’s basketball team continued a late-season roll here Saturday with a crucial 73-41 victory over Brewton-Parker in the Southern States Athletic Conference.

The win was the fourth in a row for the Mariners (11-15 overall, 6-10 league) and it assured the team a spot in the upcoming conference tournament.

Coastal Georgia closes out the regular season next week with games at Faulkner on Thursday and Auburn-Montgomery on Saturday. Both games are in Montgomery, Ala., which also will be the site of the conference tourney the following week.

Saturday’s win also was the second for Coastal Georgia over Brewton-Parker (5-21, 1-14) this season. The Mariners knocked off the Barons 59-55 at home on Feb. 6 to kick start their current winning streak.

On Saturday, the Mariners took charge from the beginning, surging ahead 13-5 in the opening quarter and padding that cushion to 30-16 at halftime.

Coastal Georgia put away the game with a big third quarter, scoring 22 points to just 13 by the Barons. For good measure, the Mariners outscored the home squad 21-12 over the final 10 minutes.

“I was proud of the team effort again,” said Coastal Georgia head coach Jonathon Barbaree. “We did a great job of sharing the ball and got great scoring and rebounding from our bench.”

The Mariners got balanced scoring while shooting 49 percent (25-51) from the field for the game. Gabby O’Sullivan and Schyler Miller led the offensive effort with 13 points apiece, Janne Tullius followed with 11 and Anissa Toumi contributed 10. Breanna Walker just missed double figures with nine points off the bench.

Jamila Mayfield led the Mariners with 12 rebounds as they dominated on the glass, pulling down 55 rebounds to just 27 by the Barons.

Coastal Georgia held the home team to just 25 percent shooting (18-72), cleaning up the defensive backboards to finish with 44 defensive rebounds.

The only negative for the Mariners was 24 turnovers for the afternoon.

The game also produced a career milestone for Tullius. The senior guard and four-year player for the Mariners eclipsed the 1,000-point mark in the win. She was just five points shy of the mark going into the game.

“I want to congratulate her,” Barbaree said. “She has stepped up really big for us this year, playing multiple positions and answering the call.”
