They say basketball is a game of runs. But a season-opening junior varsity game between Toombs County and Appling County, played in Baxley, proved baseball can also be a game of runs. The Bulldogs scored three runs in the top of the first and then the Pirates reeled off nine straight before the Dawgs closed the game scoring 10 straight, in the final two inning, to secure a 13-9 victory. Brock Harrison hit three balls really hard. He lined a shot of the third baseman’s glove for a single, he doubled to center field with the bases loaded to score three runs in the sixth and he pulled a double to left in the seventh. Harrison also helped settle the situation on the mound throwing two innings and allowing just a hit and an earned run. Brandon Dennis picked up a win in relief throwing a three-up, three-down sixth with two strikeouts and then he got one more out in the seventh before Cole Graham recorded the final two outs to end the game and earn a save.
