Twenty-seven days after the Toombs County Bulldogs beat Appling County by 11 in Baxley and the Lady Bulldogs lost to the Lady Pirates by 20, the results were reversed in the rematch in Lyons. Both Toombs County teams opened up double-digit leads in the third quarter with the Lady Bulldogs holding on to a 48-40 victory while the Bulldogs lost a heart-breaker 70-67.
The 6-11 Lady Bulldogs opened up a 7-4 lead after the opening quarter and they were up 20-16 at half. In the third quarter TCHS outscored Appling 15-8 to expand the lead to 35-24 going to the fourth quarter. Joann Gomez, who made 7-of-9 at the free throw line, led the Lady Dawgs with 15 points. Dominique Jones made a 3-pointer and 7-of-13 at the line and scored 14 points. Jocelyn Walker hit a 3-ball and scored five points, Shakevia Knight added four, Demetria Jones playing for the first time since she injured her foot at Treutlen swished a 3-pointer and Aisha Shipman scored two.
The 3-12 Bulldogs got off to a fast start and led Appling 9-2 and 15-12 after the first quarter and 37-32 at half. D.R. Meadows (16 points) hit the last shot of the first half, a 3-pointer from the left wing with six seconds remaining, and then the junior scored eight points in the third quarter swishing two 3’s as the Bulldogs built up a 13 point lead. The Dawgs had a 52-47 lead going to the fourth quarter.
In the final period Appling built up a six point advantage. However, the Bulldogs rallied and pulled to within one and then trailing by three with 3.3 second remaining, Meadows raced across the timeline and tried a long 3-pointer which hit the rim right before the buzzer. Jalen Mobley scored 15 points and hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the second quarter. Andre Clark scored eight, Keshawn Morgan six and Bronza Jones four.
