The Toombs County competition cheerleading hasn’t had a “home game” since October of 2013. That will end on Saturday when the Cheer Dawgs play host to the Cheer Dawg Classic in the new TCHS Gym. This will be a big event with a total of 36 teams traveling to Lyons- 24 high school squads and 12 middle school teams including the TCMS Cheer Pups.

The Cheer Dawgs are scheduled to hit the mat at 2:47 p.m. “We are really excited because we actually get to compete in our new school gym and we are getting new cheer mats for our competition. So, we don’t get to practice in our new gym until we compete,” junior Cheyenne Kelly said.

The Cheer Dawg Classic will be the sixth and final regular season competition for TCHS. Last Saturday, in Statesboro, the girls finished fourth and the week before they were the top AAA team in Vidalia’s Sweet Onion Cheer Classic. The Cheer Dawg Classic is the final tuneup prior to the Region 1 AAA competition in Statesboro. The top four teams at that event will move on to Columbus for sectionals and state.

“It (Cheer Dawg Classic) is going to tell us what we need to do and what we need to practice,” junior Kara Hayes said. “The judges help us with their comments and tell us where we stand.” All the girls are excited to compete at home. “I think it is going to be awesome,” Hayes added. “We are going to go out there and rock the mats and show our town what competition cheerleading really is because some people think it’s not even a sport.”
