The Toombs County Middle School Bullpups came within two-points of winning their first game of the season. TCMS put together two touchdown drives, but the Pups yielded two big plays to Antonio Mercer in a 14-12 loss at East Laurens.
East Laurens drove down to the Bullpup five-yard line on it’s first drive. However, the Bullpups stopped the Falcons on a fourth down pass play. From the five TCMS drove 95-yards in 18 plays. The Pups converted on one fourth down play on a run by Tyrike Butler. Left-handed quarterback Trey Cloud completed a pass to Jarrett Hall and he ran the ball down to the one, just missing scoring a TD on a dive to the left pylon. Butler finished the drive with a one-yard run to put TCMS up 6-0 with 7.5 seconds remaining in the first half. Cloud almost converted a two-point run. However, he came up less than a yard short of crossing the goal line.
Toombs started the second half with an onside kick which was recovered by East Laurens at the Falcon 48. On the next play Mercer broke away and scored on a 52-yard run. Mercer also ran the ball into the end zone giving East Laurens an 8-6 lead with 7:47 to play in the third quarter.
The Bullpups regained the lead with their second touchdown drive, a 46-yard effort, which featured a 40-yard run to the three-yard line by NyQuan Coleman, who just returned to the team after an injury. T.Y. Myrick ran the ball up the middle and into the end zone. The two-point run failed and with 1:16 to go in the third quarter, so Toombs had a 12-8 lead.
On the kickoff Mercer struck again catching the ball at his 30-yard line and then racing away on a 70-yard kickoff return. The Falcons’ two-point run failed as the home team took a 14-12 lead.
