The Harris brothers, Cameron and Trevon, started and ended the bottom of the sixth inning with big hits as the Lyons Flea Boys baseball team edged Vidalia 3-2 to win the GRPA 8 and under State Tournament. This group of seven and eight year old boys became the first Lyons team to win a state championship since 1993, when the boys and girls mite teams both won a state championship. It was inevitable that Lyons and Vidalia would not only meet for the championship of the 16-team tourney, but that they would play an intense, tight one-run game.
The two rivals each made it to the title games of the Lyons Youth Tournament and the District 1 Tournament and both times Vidalia won the first game by slim margins of 11-10 in the LYT and 12-10 in the district. Each time Lyons won the if necessary game to finish first- 22-21 in the LYT and 17-9 in district.
The low scoring state championship game was scoreless until the top of the third. Lyons made two errors in the top of the first, but a double play kept Vidalia off the scoreboard. Cameron Harris stroked a clean hit in the bottom of the first and then Lyons didn’t belt a second hit until Kip Mosley (1-for-2) leadoff the fourth with a single.
Vidalia scored single runs in the third and fourth to take a 2-0 lead. Vidalia leadoff hitter Aiden Stokes (1-for-3) singled and scored on a Lyons error in the third and then Rayce Sharpe (1-for-2) singled in a run with two-outs in the fourth. Jesus Quintero (1-for-2) singled in a pair of runs, with two outs, in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. Mosley and Trevon Harris touched home.
